Abstract

A flood barrier which can applied to an opening in a building comprises a structure with inflatable tubing 10 which acts, when inflated, as struts on a backing material 12 and a neoprene sealing band 13 makes a watertight seal round the opening when flood waters rise. The barrier may extend only part way up the opening.

Description

FLOOD PREVENTION The invention is to prevent water entering your property through door and window openings in flood conditions.
At present, people rely on sand bags to stem the flow of water through the property in floods. These are inadequate and cumbersome to use. In many cases, short notice is given to an impending flood.
The object of this invention is to provide a quick and easy to assemble, water tight barrier to door and window openings, without using any permanent feature.
FIGURE 1 shows the device inflated and covering the full opening.
When a flood warning has been sounded, you semi-inflate the device using a manual pump or compressed air cylinder. Lift the device into the opening and fully inflate.
The 100mm heavy duty PVC 10 acts like struts forcing the neoprene 13 into the door step, and reveals and head of door/window 16. When the water levels rise, it pushes the device against the door/window frame. When the water levels subsides, you simply remove the bung 14 and deflate. Fold and store away ready for further use. FIGURE 2 shows the device inflated and covering the bottom portion of door opening.
FIGURE 2 requires an adjustable threaded bar 15, which is placed in the door opening. Tighten the bar which wedges against the rubber pads against the door reveals 16. Let the device hang down. Using a manual pump or compressed air cylinder, fully inflate 14. The 100 mm heavy duty PVC 10 acts as struts which forces the neoprene pads 13 against the step and reveals of the door, making a water tight seal. When the water levels rise, it pushes against the door and frame. When the water levels subsides, you simply remove the bung 14 and deflate. Fold and store away for further use. MANUFACTURING PROCESS FIGURE 1 Form 100 mm diameter tubing using a heavy duty PVC.
Cut to length and width of opening using mitred joints.
Weld all joints with a chemical bonding agent making an air tight seal.
Weld heavy duty PVC frame to backing using a chemical bonding agent.
Weld a 25 mm x 75 mm neoprene strip to outer edge of PVC frame using a chemical bonding agent.
Add a valve which would allow the device to be inflated manually with a pump or a compressed air cylinder MANUFACTURING PROCESS FIGURE 2 Form 100 mm diameter tubing using a heavy duty PVC.
Cut to a height of 1.5 m (not specific) and width of opening using mitred joints.
Weld all joints with a chemical bonding agent making an air tight seal.
Weld heavy duty PVC frame to backing using a chemical bonding agent.
Weld a 25 mm x 75 mm neoprene strip to out edge of PVC frame using a chemical bonding agent.
Add a valve which would allow the device to be inflated manually with a pump or a compressed air cylinder.
Form a loop at top of device to allow a light weight chrome threaded bar to be placed through.

Claims (5)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A inflatable flood prevention barrier that is lightweight, quick and easy to assemble, with no permanent fixings, making it easy to deflate for easy storage and re-use.
  2. 2. A inflatable prevention barrier as claimed in Claim 1, wherein it is fully adjustable to cover all size openings.
  3. 3. A inflatable prevention barrier as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein when fully inflated, the neoprene edging will fully fill and seal all openings.
  4. 4. A inflatable prevention barrier as claimed in Claim 2 or 3, wherein if only half the opening is required to be sealed, you use the threaded and fully adjustable bar which will hold the device in place.
  5. 5. A inflatable prevention barrier substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-2 of the accompanying drawings.
