Abstract

The transporter comprises a frame mountable on one bicycle and for supporting the front wheel of a second bicycle to enable that bicycle to be transported by a rider on the one bicycle. The frame comprises parallel telescopic rails 12 connected at each end by rollers 13 on which can rest a front bicycle wheel held by the rails either side. The rails have associated upwardly extending clamp rails 10 for location either side of the rear forks of the one bicycle, these rails having respective brackets shaped to locate with the rear wheel axle of the one bicycle, and a top part with a clamp 11, coupled thereto by a locking screw 15, for fixing to the saddle pillar of the one bicycle. A further clamp, slidable on one of the rails 10, aids retention of the transported bicycle front wheel.

Description

BICYCLE TRANSPORTER The invention relates to a bicycle transporter.
The bicycle transporter provides a means by which one bicycle-the towing bicycle-, whilst being ridden in the normal way, can convey another bicycle-the towed bicyclewhich is not ridden.
The bicycle transporter is a tubular framework structure attached to the rear of the towing bicycle allowing the front wheel of the towed bicycle to be clamped, clear of the ground, to it. The towed bicycle is aligned in the same direction as the towing bicycle with its rear wheel grounded.
The bicycle transporter can be made to accommodate a towed bicycle on either side of the towing bicycle, but the side opposite the rear gear mechanism, which is usually on the left or nearside, offers more room and is shown as such in the drawings. A double transporter could be made, with a towed bicycle attached on each side of the towing bicycle, but this is felt to be unsafe.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :- Figure I shows an exploded view of the bicycle transporter and its components.
Figure 2 shows the bicycle transporter attached to the rear of the towing bicycle; Figure 3 shows the towed bicycle mounted on the bicycle transporter.
Referring to the drawings, Fig 1, shows an exploded view of the bicycle transporter.
This comprises the main framework 10, the saddle pillar attachment 11, the telescopic outer wheel location rai112, the stop/spacer bobbins 13, the locking screw 15, the spacing washers 16, the bolts 17, the quick release clamp 14 and its'rest'pin 18.
The frame 10, (Fig 2), is attached to the towing bicycle at, and by means of, the rear wheel spindle using the existing nuts, clamping it with 11 to the saddle pillar and locking screw 15. Adjustments are made to suit the towed bicycle's tyre width and wheel diameter by means of positioning the telescopic outer location rail 12, parallel to the telescopic inner location rail using the stop/spacer bobbins 13, which have two positions for width, in conjunction with the spacer washers 16, which give extra width dimensions. The bolts 17 are then tightened. The telescopic facility in the wheel location rails, allow adjustment, by means of spaced holes and sprung plungers (as in tent poles}, to be made for the wheel diameter.
The towed bicycles front wheel, (Fig 3), is pushed down to the stop/spacer bobbins 13 and between the location rails, the clamp 14 is slipped down the square clamp rail of 10, over the tyre and snapped securely down To remove the towed bicycle the clamp is unclipped, slipped upwards and the towed bicycles front wheel lifted out of its location. The clamp 14 is then located on the 'rest'pin 18.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A bicycle transporter comprising a framework construction fitted to a bicycle, allowing another bicycle to be attached to the first bicycle by means of the framework and conveyed on the highway.
  2. 2. A bicycle transporter as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the framework is fitted to a bicycle by means of its rear wheel spindle and saddle pillar.
  3. 3. A bicycle transporter as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the adjustment for the towed bicycle's front wheel measurements are obtained by means of positioning the stop/spacer bobbins, the spacer washers and the telescopic location rails.
  4. 4. A bicycle transporter as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 3 wherein a quick release clamp attached to the frame can be positioned to firmly lock the towed bicycles front wheel in place.
