Abstract
A method and composition for permanently reducing or preventing wool growth at a selected locality is disclosed. In a particular application, the breech and/or pizzle area of a sheep is treated in order to prevent the incidence of blowfly strike and/or balanitis. The method comprises treating with any composition comprising a follicle-ablating agent and subsequently irradiating the skin with electromagnetic radiation of an intensity and/or wavelength to bring about photodynamic ablation. There is also disclosed a composition containing 10% (w/w) of an aqueous solution of 5-aminolvulinic acid (5-ALA) and at least 80% (w/w) diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (DGME).
