Abstract

A thin-walled container (10) and lid (16) assembly for holding liquids has the top of the container terminating in an outwardly extending lip (12) and therebelow has a peripheral seat (14). The lid (16) is provided with a peripheral channel (18). The outer face or part thereof of the outer wall (20) of the channel (18) is to engage against the peripheral seat (14) of the container (10) with the outer wall (20) having seat-retaining means. The lid (16) is re-closable across the top of the container (10) and has first and second portions (22, 24) integral one with the other with a hinge facility between the first and second portions (22, 24) to enable the first portion (22) to be moved relative to the second portion (24) to partially open the container (10) for liquid to be poured therefrom and thereafter to reseal the container (10).

Description

CONTAINER AND LID ASSEMBLY This invention relates to a thin-walled container and lid assembly, the container being for holding pouring liquids, such as cream.
Accordingly, the present invention is a thin-walled container and lid assembly in which the top of the container terminates in an outwardly extending lip and therebelow has a peripheral seat, and the lid is provided with a peripheral channel, the outer face or part thereof of the outer wall of which is to engage against the peripheral seat of the container with the outer wall having seat-retaining means, the lid being re-closable across the top of the container and having first and second portions integral one with the other with a hinge facility between the first and second portions to enable the first portion to be moved relative to the second portion to partially open the container for liquid to be poured therefrom and thereafter to reseat the container.
Preferably, an outwardly peripheral flange extends from the top of the outer wall to overlie the corresponding peripheral lip of the container. The seat - retaining means desirably comprises one or more longitudinal ribs provided peripherally in the outer face of the channel of the lid to abut against the wall of the peripheral seat. Between the top of the peripheral seat and the lip of the container, an inwardly projecting rim is beneficially provided to hold the lid in a closed position, the rim and/or the ribs flexing to allow the ribs to locate into the seat in a closed position, and vice-versa in an opening position. Also, between
the rim and the flange a chamfered mouth is desirably provided to assist in the locating of the lid into the peripheral seat.
Preferably also, the hinge facility comprises two aligned bridges being provided through the channel in the lid, the lid being able to flex about a line between the two bridges, the line delineating the first and second portions. The outer wall of the channel preferably has a vertical cross-section including from the bottom a concave arcuate portion merging into the rib, or side between two adjacent ribs, with the rib merging into the side, the top of which translates into the substantially horizontal peripheral flange.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which :- Fig 1 is a side view of a container and lid assembly according to the present invention, the lower part of the container being omitted for clarity; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the container ; Figs. 3A and 3B are respectively two side views of the assembly at ninety degrees to one another and showing a first portion of the lid hinged upwardly ; Figs. 4A and 4B are cross-sectional details on the line IV-IV of Fig. 2 of the assembly with the lid in a closed and in an open position respectively ; Fig. 5 IS a plan view of a square lid for a square-mouthed container; and Fig. 6 is a side view of the lid as shown in Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, a thin-walled container and lid assembly is provided in which the top of the container 10 terminates in an outwardly extending lip 12 and therebelow has a peripheral seat 14. The lid 16 is provided with a peripheral channel 18, the outer face or part thereof of the outer wall 20 of which is to engage against the peripheral seat 14 with the outer wall 20 having seat-retaining means. The lid 16 is re-closable across the top of the container 10 and has first and second portions 22,24 integral one with the other with the hinge facility between said first and second portions 22,24 to enable the first portion 22 to be moved relative to the second portion 24 to partially open the container 10 for liquid to be poured therefrom and thereafter to reseal the container 10.
An outwardly peripheral flange 26 extends from the top of the outer wall 20 to overlie the corresponding peripheral lip 12 of the container 10. The flange 26 of the first portion 22 has a shaped extension 28 which projects beyond the flange 26 to act as a pull tab. The seat-retaining means comprises one or more longitudinal ribs 30 provided peripherally in the outer wall 20 of the channel 18 to abut against the wall of the peripheral seat 14 as shown. Between the top of the peripheral seat 14 and the lip 12 of the container, an inwardly projecting rim 32 is provided to hold the lid 16 in a closed position, the rim 32 and/or the ribs 30 flexing to allow the ribs 30 to locate into the seat 14 in a closed position as shown and vice-versa in an opening position. Also, between the rim 32 and the lip 12 a chamfered mouth 34 is provided to assist in the locating of the lid 16
into the peripheral seat 14. The part of the channel 18 at the first portion 22 aligned with the pull tab extension 28 is curved upwardly at 29 The hinge facility comprises two aligned bridges 36 provided through the channel 18 in the lid 16. The lid 16 is able to flex about a line 17 between the two bridges 36 with the line 17 delineating the first and second portions, 22,24.
The configuration of the bridges may differ from that shown in the drawings.
The outer wall 20 of the channel 18 has a vertical cross-section (as shown in Figs. 4A and 4B) including from the bottom a concave arcuate portion 38 merging into the rib 30, or side between two adjacent ribs 30 with the rib 30 merging into the side, the top of which translates into the substantially horizontal peripheral flange 26. The centre of the lid 16 may be recessed to provide for container base stackability where two or more assemblies are provided in a stacked column.
A container and lid assembly are used to hold pouring cream. In use, when the cream is required, the first portion 22 of the lid 16 is lifted up as shown in Figs. 4A and 4B and the container 10 tipped for cream to flow out.
After sufficient cream is poured out, the container 10 is righted and first portion 22 is closed into the mouth of the container 10.
The container and lid assembly may be both of homogeneous recyclable plastics material, preferably polypropylene.
Variations and modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention described above and as described hereinafter.

Claims (9)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A thin-walled container and lid assembly in which the top of the container terminates in an outwardly extending lip and therebelow has a peripheral seat, and the lid is provided with a peripheral channel, the outer face or part thereof of the outer wall of which is to engage against the peripheral seat of the container with the outer wall having seat-retaining means, the lid being reclosable across the top of the container and having first and second portions integral one with the other with a hinge facility between the first and second portions to enable the first portion to be moved relative to the second portion to partially open the container for liquid to be poured therefrom and thereafter to reseal the container.
  2. 2. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1, wherein an outwardly peripheral flange extends from the top of the outer wall to overlie the corresponding peripheral lip of the container.
  3. 3. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the seat-retaining means comprises one or more longitudinal ribs provided peripherally in the outer face of the channel of the lid to abut against the wall of the peripheral seat.
  4. 4. An assembly as claimed in Claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein between the top of the peripheral seat and the lip of the container, an inwardly projecting rim is provided to hold the lid in a closed position, the rim and/or the ribs flexing to allow the ribs to locate into the seat in a closed position, and vice-versa in an opening position.
  5. 5. An assembly as claimed in Claim 4, wherein between the rim and the flange a chamfered mouth is provided to assist in the locating of the lid into the peripheral seat.
  6. 6. An assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the hinge facility comprises two aligned bridges provided through the channel in the
    lid, the lid being able to flex about a line between the two bridges, the line delineating the first and second portions.
  7. 7. An assembly as claimed in any one of Claims 3 to 6, wherein the outer wall of the channel has a vertical cross-section including from the bottom a concave arcuate portion merging into the rib, or side between two adjacent ribs, with the rib merging into the side, the top of which translates into the substantially horizontal peripheral flange.
  8. 8. An assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the top of the lid is recessed.
  9. 9. An assembly substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
