Abstract
A method of producing an article of manufacture is disclosed. The method comprises a first step of separating a discarded item, particularly a consumer product, into parts and a second step of setting or forming the parts in a transparent and/or translucent plastics material. The parts may be formed or set via moulding or casting. The discarded item may be a mobile telephone.
Description
"IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO AN ARTICLE OF MANUFACTURE" This invention relates to an article of manufacture and to a method of producing an article of manufacture.
The use of disposable or discardable products has become common and widespread. These products are chiefly manufactured from plastics material and, although some are designed to be biodegradable, those products with a longer service life are either non-biodegradable or will take an extremely long time to biodegrade.
The fundamental problem with these types of products is that, due in part to the limitations on sizes of landfills, the physical practicalities of, and expense associated with, stockpiling, and government regulations and directives, there are only so many items that can be discarded before the manufacturer has to consider limiting production in order to limit waste accumulation.
A further drawback occurs with so-called'high-tech'disposable products, such as mobile phones. It is desirable to re-use the plastics components, but these have to initially be separated from the non-recyclable parts, such as the electronic and metal components. It is therefore often more cost effective for a manufacturer to simply stockpile these products than to separate their parts for re-use.
The present invention seeks to provide a solution to these problems. According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of producing an article of manufacture, the method comprising a first step of separating a discarded item into parts and a second step of setting or forming the parts in a transparent and/or translucent plastics material.
Preferable and/or optional features of the first aspect of the present invention are set out in claims 2 to 7.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided an article of manufacture made according to the method in accordance with the first aspect of the invention.
One embodiment of the invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example.
Discarded or disposable items are separated into parts, at least some of which should desirably be deducible or recognisable as formerly originating from a particular known consumer product or products, by any typical or commonly available method or process, such as by an automated breaking/cutting up process and/or dismantling by hand.
These parts can then be formed or set, typically via moulding or casting, using a clear binder to bond the parts, preferably in a substantially even and/or random relative distribution. The article thus produced allows a viewer the novelty of seeing the separated parts. Desirably, but necessarily, the originating product or indeed products should be identifiable.
The discarded items are typically ones which use more than one type of material in their production. In the case of a mobile telephone, for example, complete separation of the electronic components, metals and plastics is not a necessity. The item may be broken into two or more parts, for example, in the case of a mobile phone, into a hand-set and a fold down mouth piece, but those parts may comprise more than one type of material, such as plastics and metal.
The items may equally be any other type of discardable, disposable and/or recyclable waste.
The clear binder may be any suitable transparent and/or translucent plastics material, such as polyurethane, a thermosetting resin or an acrylic resin. The resin may be a polyester or a polyurethane based resin.
The finished article (s) may take the form of an ash-tray, paper weight, plant
pot, waste paper bin, work surface, or any other suitable article.
The article (s) may be used, typically by the manufacturer of the disposable item, for promotional purposes.
The embodiment described above is given by way of example only and various modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention.
Claims (10)
1. A method of producing an article of manufacture, the method comprising a first step of separating a discarded item into parts and a second step of setting or forming the parts in a transparent and/or translucent plastics material.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the separating includes dismantling the discarded item.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the separating includes breaking and/or cutting up the discarded item.
4. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein, subsequent to separation, the discarded item is deducible or recognisable as formerly being a particular consumer product.
5. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the plastics material is a thermosetting resin.
6. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the plastics material is an acrylic resin.
7. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the discarded item is a mobile phone.
8. A method substantially as hereinbefore described.
9. An article of manufacture made according to the method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
10. An article of manufacture substantially as hereinbefore described.
