The arrangement comprises a compliant panel suspension (22) on the rear panel face and an acoustic absorber (12) attached to the panel suspension (22). The acoustic absorber (12) is attached to a wall (28) by wall fixings (14).
Description
TITLE : LOUDSPEAKERS
DESCRIPTION The invention relates to loudspeakers and more particularly to bending-wave panel loudspeakers, e. g. of the kind described in W097/09842.
It is an object of the invention to facilitate the wall-mounting, or the equivalent surface mounting of bending-wave panel loudspeakers. A problem with wall mounting such a loudspeaker is that reflected acoustic radiation from the face of the panel facing the wall, i. e. the rear face, can interfere destructively with the panel's front face output. One solution to this problem is to enclose the rear panel face in an enclosure or baffle.
The present invention aims to provide an alternative solution where the cost and appearance of such a rear enclosure is avoided.
According to the invention there is provided a panelform loudspeaker adapted to be mounted directly to a wall or the like, the loudspeaker comprising a panel which is capable of supporting bending wave vibration, the panel having a front face from which acoustic radiation is to be projected and a rear face to be positioned adjacent to the wall, a vibration transducer mounted on the panel for driving bending-wave vibration into the panel to produce an acoustic output, and a wall mounting arrangement for supporting the loudspeaker on the wall, the arrangement comprising a compliant panel suspension on the rear panel face and an acoustic absorber attached to the panel suspension and adapted for attachment to the wall, the acoustic absorber extending over a major part of the rear panel face.
The vibration transducer or exciter may be on the rear face of the panel. Alternatively, the vibration transducer may be positioned in a cavity in the acoustic absorber.
The compliant panel suspension may be co-extensive with the acoustic absorber and may comprise a layer of resilient foam material. Alternatively, the material of the acoustic absorber may also form the panel suspension.
The acoustic absorber may extend near to the panel edges. The acoustic absorber may be of acoustic foam and may be in the form of a block.
Wall fixings may be provided on a rear face of the acoustic absorber. These may, for example, be detachable
ffixings e. g. of Velcro or the like.
'A The panel may be as taught in W097/09842 and hence may be capable of supporting resonant bending wave modes and the transducer may be mounted to the panel to excite resonant bending wave modes to produce an acoustic output
The panel may thus be frame-less.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear view of a loudspeaker according to the invention and
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional side view of the loudspeaker of Figure 1.
Figures 1 and 2 show a loudspeaker which is designed to be mounted direct to a wall or the like. The loudspeaker comprises an acoustic member in the form of a panel (10) which is capable of supporting bending wave vibration, in particular resonant bending wave modes. Two vibration transducers (14) are mounted to a rear face (24) of the panel (10) and are connected to an electric input via wires (18). The transducers (14) excite bending wave vibration in the panel to produce an acoustic output which is projected from the front face (26) of the panel. The panel and transducer locations may be chosen as taught in
W097/09842 so that the loudspeaker may be considered a distributed mode loudspeaker.
The loudspeaker further comprises an acoustic absorber (12) positioned adjacent to the rear face (24) of the panel and a compliant panel suspension (22) sandwiched
between the rear panel face (24) and the acoustic absorber (12). The compliant panel suspension comprises a layer of resilient foam material and the acoustic absorber is of acoustic foam. Thus, in combination, the panel suspension and acoustic absorber provide maximal acoustic absorption so that acoustic output from the rear face of the panel is greatly reduced. In this way the problem of destructive interference between the radiation from the rear face and the front face is alleviated or prevented.
The compliant panel suspension (22) is co-extensive with the acoustic absorber (12). The compliant panel suspension (22) extends over a major part of the rear panel face (24) but does not extend to the edges of the panel. Each vibration transducer (16) is positioned in a cavity in the acoustic absorber. The panel suspension (22) and acoustic absorber (12) form part of the mounting arrangement for the loudspeaker. The mounting arrangement also comprises four wall fixing units (14) which are attached to a rear face of the acoustic absorber (12) and are designed to attach to the wall (28). In this way, the loudspeaker is mounted to the wall (28) using a mounting arrangement which is concealed behind the panel and without the need for a frame surrounding the edges (20) of the panel.
The invention thus provides an alternative to a rear enclosure or baffle for a wall mounted bending-wave panel loudspeaker.
