Abstract

A plastic strip, with adhesive on one side and a backing layer and a hole in the centre. The hole is star shaped to grip the sheath of a hypodermic needle when pushed through the strip. This whole strip protects the hand holding the sheath whilst the used needle is inserted back into the sheath. Once the needle has been returned to the sheath, the sides of the strip are folded together which prevents the needle from being extracted and it is ready for safe disposal, held securely within the folded adhesive strip.

Description

HYPODERMIC NEEDLES SAFETY AND DISPOSAL SYSTEM The invention relates to the safe handling and disposal of hypodermic needles by health care professionals.
The most dangerous time in needle handling for the health care professional is when returning the needle to its sheath after use, with the possibility of infection by accidental skin puncture by a contaminated needle. This invention safely guides the needle back to its sheath and protects the hand from accidental puncture.
Immediately after use the needle is returned to the sheath which is already safely held and secured by the guide. Thus secured, there is no possibility of injury or contamination from the needle by skin penetration whilst returning the needle to its sheath.
The guide will be made of a plastic material strong enough to resist needle penetration and self-adhesive : the self-adhesive surface will be protected initially by a peel-back veneer which will reveal an adhesive coating. The guides can be either individual, or be capable of being removed as required from a perforated strip. The sheath of the hypodermic needle will be held securely in place by the guide.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure I shows an overview of the guide strip with securing hole for the hypodermic needle sheath in centre.
Figure 2 shows safety guard through centre hole and needle being extracted. Figure 3 shows self-adhesive wings folded up and now securing the sheath and needle after removal of strip from adhesive outer layer. Needle and sheath are now secured by the device for safe disposal.

Claims (6)

  1. HYPODERMIC NEEDLES SAFETY AND DISPOSAL SYSTEM CLAIMS Although the needle sheath of the standard hypodermic syringe protects the user whilst it is in position, the transition period from unprotected to protected leaves the operator vulnerable to an accidental skin prick and therefore in danger of infection from a contaminated needle.
This system: 1. Reduces risk of loss of the sheath.
  2. 2. Protects the hands whilst applying the sheath.
  3. 3. Discourages accidental unsheathing and secondary usage of the needle.
  4. 4. Gives a clear indication that the needle has been used.
  5. 5. Reduces the risk of contamination from a used needle.
  6. 6. Ensures safe disposal.
