Abstract

A boat comprises a number of independent buoyant compartments 10 which can be separated when the boat is not in use and stacked inside each other for storage Fig 4. The compartments may be held together by means of frames 12 and 14, bolts or clamps. A separate watertight compartment (18, Fig 2) may be provided for the occupant's feet. Each compartment may have a removable cover 16.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> Portable boat. This invention relates to a portable boat.
A number of small floating devices capable of carrying one or more people across water, and which are easily transported overland are known. These devices fall into one of the following categories: - I . Inflatable boats.
2. Folding boats - relying on hinged hull sections. 3. Solid hulled boats The device described here is lighter than an inflatable boat and does not suffer from punctures or need to be inflated. Unlike a folding boat it does not rely on the integrity of hinged sections and seals to remain watertight and unlike a conventional small boat it can be transported inside a car.
According to the present invention there is provided a boat comprising a number of independent, buoyant compartments. The compartments can be separated when the boat is not in use and are designed in such a way that the compartments will stack inside each other for storage.
Two specific embodiments of the invention will now be described.
The first example incorporates a support frame and is described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:- Figure I shows a general arrangement of the boat with the buoyancy compartments removed from the frame.
Figure 2 shows a side view of the boat with the buoyancy compartments removed showing the arrangement of the footwells, Figure 3 shows a plan of the assembled boat showing the seating arrangement. Figure 4 shows the boat disassembled and with the buoyancy compartments stacked ready for transportation.
Referring to the drawing the boat comprises four independent buoyant compartments 10 together with a left frame 12 and right frame 14. Each buoyant compartment has a removable cover 16. When in use the left hand frame and right hand frame are held together by a clip or clamp (not shown). The buoyant compartments are held in position by the frame by for example sliding into grooves in the retaining arms of the frame or by other suitable means (not shown).
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
To provide a comfortable seating position, two watertight footwells 18 and a seat 20 are provided.
When the boat is disassembled then the buoyancy compartments stack inside each other as shown in FigA and the footwells and seat fit inside the innermost buoyancy compartment. The two halves of the frame can be separated for ease of storage.
The second example describes an arrangement wherein the buoyancy compartments are designed such that they can be bolted or clamped directly together without a support frame.
Fig 5 shows a plan view of the assembled boat. Fig 6 shows a side view of the assembled boat.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 5 shows a boat with four similar buoyancy compartments without covers, which are clamped or bolted together directly. In this arrangement a seat or seats 22 is/are provided as shown.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A boat comprising a number of independent, buoyant compartments. The compartments can be separated when the boat is not in use and are designed in such a way that the compartments will stack inside each other for storage.
  2. 2. A boat as claimed in Claim I wherein the watertight compartments are held in position but not adjacent to each other by a frame.
  3. 3. A boat as claimed in Claim I wherein the watertight compartments are held in position adjacent to each other by connecting the compartments together directly by means of bolts or a clamp.
  4. 4. A boat as claimed in Claim2 wherein separate watertight compartments are provided for the occupants feet.
