Abstract

A vehicle 29 is provided with transmitter/receivers 21,22 for emission of electromagnetic waves into blindspot regions 19,20 at the sides of the vehicle. Obstructions 23,24 in the paths of the waves then trigger an alarm in warning devices (25,26 in Figure 3) on the driver's and passenger's mirrors. This in the form of an illuminated signal relaying the distance of the obstruction 23,24 from the vehicle, may be mainly restricted to the driver's vision in the mirror, and may be either an illuminated numerical value of the distance, or a flashing light whose lighting frequency is dependent on the distance to the obstruction. Alternatively, the alarm signal may comprise an audible warning whose volume is dependent on the distance.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> DRIVERS WARNING DEVICE This invention relates to warning the driver of a motor vehicle that there is an obstruction in a certain area that is not covered by the vehicles mirror system. It has been know for sometime that the vehicles mirror system cannot provide a comprehensive field of view for the driver and one important area which this invention deals with is the area immediately behind and below the vision seen through the drivers and passengers side window. According to the present invention a sender unit that emits electromagnetic waves is positioned on the drivers and passengers side of the vehicle to cover the area as described above and any obstruction that occurs within the area specified will activate a warning device positioned behind the two way glass of the drivers and passengers mirror. The warning device has a small observation angle and restricts the view to mainly the driver of the vehicle and therefore avoids confusion to other road users. The position of the warning device on the mirror reflective surface is such that it does not interfere with the legal field of view required by the E.E.C Directives on mirrors. The warning device can be in the form of an audible or visible signal. The audible device can be arranged to sense distance by volume and the visible illuminated signal can be arranged to register distance numerically or by the speed of intermittent flashes of light. A typical embodiment of the invention will now be described by the way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the prime mover with trailer and the field of view seen by the driver via the mirrors together with the direct view seen through the driver's and passenger's window. Figure 2 shows a plan view of the prime mover with trailer and the field of view seen by the driver via the mirror together with the direct viewseen through the driver's and passenger's window also shown is the areas covered by the electromagnetic waves of the sender units. Figure 3 shows a cutaway perspective of the driver's cab and the position of the warning device on the driver's mirror and it's relationship to the driver's position. Figure 4 shows a perspective of the driver's cab and the position of the warning device on the passenger's mirror. Referring to the drawing Fig 1 shows the fields of view 10 and 11 seen by the driver's eyes 12 through the side window 13 and 14. Also shown is the fields of view 15 and 16 seen by the driver's eyes 12 via the passenger's mirrors 17 and 30 also the driver's mirror 18. From the drawing Fig 1 it can be seen that there are areas 19 and 20 between the two fields of view that are not covered by direct fields of view 10 and 11 and the mirror fields of view 15 and 16. The drawing Fig 2 shows sender units 21 and 22 and their approximate positions on the vehicle's cab 29 that allows them to emit electromagnetic waves in an areas specified above that is 19 and 20. If these electromagnetic waves are obstructed in any way such as obstacles 23 or 24 the devices 21 or 22 will be activated causing signals 25 or 26 to alert the driver in the form of a visual numerical indicator the presence of an obstruction in the specified areas.

Fig 3 shows the warning device 26 on the drivers mirror 18 and it's relative position to the field of view image 27 seen by the driver on the driver's mirror 18 reflective surface. A similar arrangement is on Fig 4 that shows the warning device 25 on the passenger's mirror 17 and it's relative position to the field of view image 28 seen by the driver on the passenger's reflective surface.

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS 1 A warning device positioned on a motor vehicle's mirror informing the driver via a sender unit emitting electromagnetic waves positioned on the side of the vehicle that there is an obstruction in the path of these waves. This device is in the form of an illuminated signal relaying the distance the obstruction is away from the vehicle. 2 The warning device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the informing illuminated signal is mainly restricted to the driver's vision, thus preventing confusion to other road users. 3 A warning device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the signal produced is an illuminated intermittent one whose speed of light intermittence is dependent upon the distance of the obstruction away from the vehicle. 4 A warning device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the signal produced is an audible one whose volume is dependent upon the distance of obstruction away from the vehicle. 5 A warning device as claimed in Claim. L, wherein the signal produced is an illuminated numerical one, on which its numerical value is dependent upon the distance of the obstruction away from the vehicle.
