Abstract

The retraction system comprises of a multi-position joint 9, suspended from a bar 6, by means of a rod 8 to which it is fixed. This multi-position joint controls the instrument-holder 10 fixed to it's other end. The bar 6 is anchored to a set of clamps in the vertical pole. In the other set of clamps at the top end of the vertical pole is secured a flat cross-bar 4 with spikes having a protective knob 5. The sterile drape which covers the cross-bar with spikes is secured to the frame by means of a clip 12.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> HANDS-FREE RETRACTION SYSTEM FOR USE IN SURGERY This invention relates to an retraction system, assembled for use in surgery, which frees the assistant from holding a retractor.
Retraction of wound edges and organs is essential for obtaining adequate access at the Site Of Surgery and this is increasingly achieved by the use of self-retaining retractors instead of the assistant surgeon having to manually hold the retractor. The commonly available hand-held retractors available in most hospitals are usually not compatible with most of the retraction systems. The assembly of the retraction system may not be simple and the assemblage may hinder the surgeon standing close to the patient.
The object of the present Invention is to provide an easily assembled retraction system, making use of the commonly available hand-held retractors thereby reducing cost, and ensuring that the assemblage does not hinder the surgeon standing close to the patient. Accordingly, this invention provides a retractor for use in surgery, in which a multi- position Joint attached to an instrument-holder (that holds commonly available hand-held retractors) at it's one end and, to a rod at it's side / other end which can be releasably suspended from a frame.
The present invention also provides vertical poles with more than one clamp that can support hotizontal rods, to which instruments can be releasably secured. In addition the present invention provides a means of securing the stefile drape to the retractor-frame. A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which FIGURE I shows the front view of the assembled retraction system FIGUR-E 2 is the rear oblique view showing the clip to secure the drape FIGUR-E 3 is the lateral view of the vertical pole with the horizontal rods secured
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
The vertical pole I is secured at either side of the operating table, towards the head-end of the patient, by means of standard clamps, The cross bar 4 is placed between the Jaws, symmetrical or asymmetrical, of the clamp 2 on the top end of the vertical pole I and secured tightly by means of the screw. The patient is draped in the routine manner.
A broad and long sterile drape is placed over the assembled frame. There should be enough slack in the drape over the clamp 3 to accommodate the sterile bar 6.
The sterile drape, as it flows down (in the direction of the head of the patient) over the spikes 5, is secured at the back of the vertical pole I by means of the clips 12, so that it does not fall on the patients face and allows access to the patient's face and neck.
The sterile bar 6, smooth or marked, is placed over the towel in the clamp 3) and secured by tightening the screw at the back. One lumen of the double-lumen clamp 7 is engaged around the bar 6. The hanging rod 8 (fixed to the multi-position Joint) is passed through the other lumen of the double-lumen clamp 7, and secured in the appropriate position by tightening the screw.
A suitable hand-held retractors (Kelly's, Langenbeck, etc.) is placed in the instrument- holder 10 and secured by tightening the screw. The angle of retraction can be adjusted by moving the multi-position Joint 9 and held in place by tightening the joint by means of the screw 11.
The costal margin can be lifted by placing an appropriate hand-held retractor (Morris, other) beneath the costal margin and the retraction is maintained in position by anchoring the retractor to the spikes 5 by means of a chain or tape / roller guaze passed around the spikes.
The vertical pole I can comprise of only one clamp to hold a bar at it's top end and a means of securing the sterile drape.
