Abstract

A label 2 for a drinks container 1 carries all the information about the drink and is partially attached to the container so as to be substantially separated or 'free-hanging' from the container. The container 1 is substantially transparent and free of such information or other labels or markings allowing the container and drink to be seen more clearly. As shown, the upper portion 3 of the label is attached to the container by adhesive. Alternatively, attachment may be by means of a cord or the like.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> Drinks Container This invention relates to a drinks container. In particular, this invention relates to a drinks container wherein information concerning details of the contents of the container is located on means substantially separated from the container itself.
In many countries, it is a legal requirement for nutritional information on food and drink to be provided on the packaging for said food and drink. Typically, nutritional information will inform the reader of the energy content of the drink, the proportions by weight or volume of the principal constituents (carbohydrate, fat, protein), the amount by weight of any trace minerals or vitamins, and in the case of alcoholic drinks, the percentage alcohol by volume.
Typically, the information is provided on a label which is wholly attached to the container, usually by means of adhesive. However, it is also possible for information, together with further information (e.g. the name of the manufacturer. the retailer, the price, or any other advertising and/or promotional matter) to be printed directly on the container (in some cases, by use of embossments).
It will be readily appreciated that a significant amount of nutritional information may be necessary to comply with the requirements of the law. The need to provide a significant amount of information not only restricts the space on the container available for promotional material but detracts from the appearance of the container itself and the drink it contains.
It would be desirable, therefore, to provide a drinks container wherein any nutritional information, together with any further details of the contents of the container (for example, the name of the manufacturer, the retailer, the price, the content of the drink. and any advertising and/or promotional matter) is present other than on the container
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
itself This would allow the manufacturer and/or the retailer to meet the legal requirements while allowing the container and possibly the drink it contains to be seen more clearly.
According to the invention, there is provided a drinks container containing a drink and provided with details of the drink, the container itself being free of such details and the details being provided on a means attached to, but substantially separated from, the container.
In preferred embodiments, the container itself is substantially transparent so that the drink may be viewed more clearly.
Details of the drink contained in the container are provided on means substantially separated from the container itself, so that the container is free of such details. Examples of the details include nutritional information, details of the contents of the container, the amount of drink present, the name of the manufacturer, retailer, the price, or any advertising and/or promotional matter.
The details are preferably provided on a label. By "label" is meant means for recording written or printed matter. Typically, the label could be made of paper cardboard, metal or plastic.
The label is substantially separated from the container, by which is meant only a small portion of the label is attached to the container and the remainder is allowed to move freely. Preferably, an upper portion of the label is attached to the container., alternatively, a lower portion of the label may be attached to the container. Preferably, at most 30% (more preferably, at most 20%) of the area of the label is attached to the container.
It is preferred that the label is partially attached to the container by means of an adhesive. Alternatively, the partial attachment may take the form of a cord or the like
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
secured both to the container and to the label. The cord may be tied to the container or label or looped through a hole thereon.
The container according to the invention is preferably free of any markings. By "markings" is meant any writing, illustrations, or any other matter the presence of which on the container would deface its otherwise unmarked appearance. Examples of possible markings would include matter printed or embossed on the container such as that referred to above, or labels wholly attached to the container by means of adhesive. The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a container 1, free of any markings. Details of the drink contained in container I are provided on label 2, the upper portion -3 ) of which is attached to container 1 by means of an adhesive. The lower portion 4 is allowed to move freely.
