Abstract
A fountain head or multiplicity of heads each provided with a means of vertical adjustment relative to a static water level and having a locking device for the adjustment. As illustrated the fountain comprises telescoping tubes 6 and 7 for adjusting the vertical height 8 relative to a static water level 9 and a locking device for the adjustment 5. The fountain head may have interchangeable nozzles 1, 2 and 3 to adjust the general spout height and a screw valve 4 or other means for regulating the flow of water to the nozzle.

SELF MODULATING FOUNTAINS 1, Eric Edgar Sunderland, a British subject of Sundial House, 5 Manscombe Road, Allerton, Bradford, BD 15 7AQ, West Yorkshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a Patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement.
Fountains have been known to man for more than 6,000 years, beginning simply as water spouts and later with greater water head supplies developed into inverted spouts and sprays in common use today.
The advent of electromagnetic valves, hydraulic valves and pneumatic valve controls made control of the fountain display possible in the second half of the 201h Century and were developed into a circus type spectacle which toured theatres.
This invention provides any fountain with a means of self-modulation, giving an adjustable but constantly variable dancing pattern to the water, without recourse to any form of automated control by valves or power sources.
Given a constant source of water it will dance ad infiniturn without any attention once correctly set up.
The fountain head is provided with interchangeable nozzles of differing bores to control the overall height of the water display from any steady water supply, pumped or piped, and a simple screw valve to fine tune the water flow; but most importantly a means of adjusting the nozzle height above level or below the static water level of the pond or lake.
With the nozzle tip set just above the static water level, the water fall back will create annular waves which lightly modulate the water spout in random manner.
If the spout is set level with the static water level, modulation will increase significantly, whilst if the nozzle is set just below the static water level, intense modulation takes place by interaction with the annular wave pattern of the fall back water.
Thus the fountain head can be tuned for flow, height and vigour to give the desired display pattern.
The system works equally well with large bore pipes as for example in a park lake display, or small bore for domestic garden ponds, using a single or multiplicity of heads even from a single water source. In figure 1, interchangeable for example screw on nozzles are shown 1 fine bore for a tall spout effect 2 medium bore for average height effect 3 large bore for a low heavy spout effect 4 is a screw type flow valve for fine tuning the water flow 5 is a locking system for the concentric sliding tubes 6 inner and 7 outer 8 shows the adjustment relative to static water level 9 10 : is any means of securing the fountain head to its piped or pumped water supply
