Abstract

The improved pallets of the present invention incorporate means which allow them to be placed safely on sloping surfaces, for example roof slopes or embankments. In the preferred embodiment of the invention a pallet is provided with hinged extendable legs. The legs may be provided wit adjustable stays or braces and may be provided with anti-slip feet. The legs may be provided on two or four corners of a pallet and are preferably such that they can be folded flat within the pallet when not required for use. The pallet may be provided with hooks for grasping roof batons.

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> Improvements to pallets Mostly, pallets, whatever materials are stacked on them, are designed only to be stacked or placed on horizontal surfaces.
This invention relates to placing and stacking pallets on angled surfaces. The invention herein described, relates to pallets containing roof tiles or slates but would apply to any other materials that need to be placed or stacked on angled surfaces. Presently roof tiles are either laddered up and stacked out on the roof by hand or hoisted onto scaffolding and then stacked out on the roof by hand. This task is time and energy consuming potentially dangerous, and needs the retention of scaffolding.
This invention relates to improvement to pallet design to enable them to be directly craned onto the angled roof or roof ridge and retained there for the roofers' direct use.
One embodiment of the pallet improvements is illustrated on drawing no: 1. This consists of a conventional wooden or wooden and plastic pallets with the attachment of 2no or Ono adjust able /extendable hinged legs or props and Ono side hooks. The hooks are to hook over tile battens and the legs extend out and down to sit on and prop against tile battens. Two legs would be employed on the roof slope and 4 legs to straddle to roof ridge. As illustrated on drawing no: 1 fig 3 the hooks would be fixed at each undercorner of the pallet with the hook turned up and then down so as not to encroach below the wooden slats and impede flat stacking.

Similarly, the hinged extendable legs are fitted at the undercorners and recessed within the bottom slats, the slats being cut short and fixed to the wooden bearer leaving such recess.
The extendable legs consist of a hinged flattened tube into which slides a flat bar. The hollow tube is holed and a steel peg, chain attached to prevent dropping is pushed through this hole to engage a series of holes in the sliding inner bar to coincide with the extended leg as it coincides with support batten.
The pallets would have been craned on to the roof slope and ridge and positioned appropriately, so that the roofer, working up the slope from the soffit would empty and remove the pallets as he worked up to them.
The embodiment previously described, employed metal hooks and hooked feet to the extendable legs in order to engage with tile battens.
Where pallets are to be placed on for instance, smooth slope, concrete, metal or similar, rubber pads or rubber sucker pads instead of hooks and rubber feet to the extendable feet could be utilised.
Furthermore, the extendable legs could be fitted with a stay/brace mechanism and example of which is illustrated on drawing no fig 4 to prevent pallet from keeling over, or doing the splits and collapsing.
