Abstract
The cot has one side which opens by means of sections pivoted about a vertical axis so that they open in the manner of a door, the preferred arrangement comprising two sections each consisting of two subsections pivoted together so that they open out and fold against each other. The cot also has the mattress on a support which is mounted on horizontal drawer type sliders so that once the side of the cot is open the mattress can be pulled out in the manner of a drawer and extend over the legs of the wheelchair bound parent to facilitate ease of handling of the child. The whole cot is mounted on an underframe which is of such a height as to facilitate the sliding out of the mattress on its support at the correct height as described above.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
A SPECIALLY DESIGNED COT FOR A DISABLED MOTHER'S BABY. Technical field This invention relates to a child's cot which has been specially designed to adjust for a wheelchair bound mother or father.
Background Babies and small children's cots are a well known design which comprises of either a wooden or metal frame which holds a mattress, in which a baby can be left safely to sleep or play without being watched.
Cots which are now being produced must comply with the British standards BS 1753 code and set specifications.
1, The gap between the mattress and the top of the bars must be at least 495mm to prevent the baby escaping from the cot.
2, The gap between each individual bar must be between 50mm-85mm.
3, There should be no gaps around the mattress and cot frame over 25mm. 4, There should be no spaces of 5mm-12mm wide, to prevent finger traps. 5, There should be no gaps of 30mm-50mm wide to prevent leg traps 6, There. should be no gaps of 85mm wide to prevent head traps.
Other obvious specifications are that the should be no sharp edges and the frame should be strong and durable enough to hold a baby safely.
The cots which are now being produced all meet the safety specifications and are all exactly the same in terms of there function.
Cots can be brought for fifty pounds upwards and they do not vary in function only in there appearance, e.g. there colour or material.
Essential technical features According to the original cot design the cot has been designed for the use of a fully able person. The standard cot is only inches of the floor which means that the user has to bend down to reach for the baby.
This would mean that for a disabled person it would be impossible for them to reach the baby, 'as they wouldn't be able to reach over the bars to pick up, or put down the baby.
So from this thought I realised that there could be something done to air a wheelchair bound person with a baby.
I reseArched the cot and disabled market trying to find a design in which had already been invented to solve this problem.
So setting out and identifying a client whom was a wheelchair bound mother I could then start identifying problems and then start to design around them.
