Abstract
Plastic, textile and/or partly elasticated sheet covers 4,6 join vehicle seat cushion 2 and backrest 1 to fixed side C-pillar 3 and side covering 5 respectively. Cover 4, 6 is fastened to both sides of the intermediate space and on one side may be movably guided in a longitudinal direction along at least one edge, hence preventing any unwanted folding of the cover. At least one of the edge sections is fastened (eg. sewn) to a movable runner (8, Fig 2), possibly extending the length of cover which is taken in to a guide rail 7 (as shown between backrest 1 and C-pillar 3). Alternatively it may comprise a plurality of rings 9 which thread over rod-like guide 10 (as shown between seat cushion 2 and side covering 5).
Description
2364500 Cover for a vehicle seat The present invention relates to a cover
for a vehicle seat with an intermediate space joining it at the side to a fixed component of the vehicle.
An arrangement for covering an intermediate space connecting to the side of a seat cushion was proposed in DE 41 12 990 Al. It comprises a bearing part which could be fastened to the edge of the seat cushion, extending across the intermediate space and which matched variable widths of intermediate space by spring force.
It is the aim of the invention, to provide a cover for a vehicle seat with an intermediate space to the side of the vehicle seat.
Accordingly the present invention is directed to a cover as described in the opening paragraph of the present specification, in which the cover is fastened to an edge section on the vehicle seat and with an opposite edge section on a fixed component of the vehicle, whereby at least one edge section is movable in a longitudinal guide.
According to the present invention the covering is fastened on both sides of the intermediate space. An -- 2.- edge section of cc)verin(j is attached to tie vehicle seat-, the oppo s i t e edge section to _: ve In.41 c 1 e fast.
component. one of the two edge sections is made tc. be mounted adjustably alnng its length. Ariv inwa 114 formation of folds in the cover on adjusting the seat is largely prevented ne-ceby, wh-;_d reduces f r i c t i-on and 4 Improves 11--lie quality of the Covering.
Advantageously at least one edqe section of the cover is fastened to at least one movable -runner- which is taken into a guide rail..
Preferably the runner extends somewhat over the whole length of the cover.
In a preferred embodiment on at least one edge section of the cover several rings are arranged which are threaded over a rod-like guide.
Advantageously the cover is made in the form of a bellows.
Preferably the cover is made from a textile or plastics material sheeting.
T A.n a preferred embodimer,,J, the cover is made- at least in part from an elastic sheet.
Examples ot covers foi a vehicle seat made in accordance with the present invention will now be described in g re a t e r detail W I reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective schematic view of an adjustable rear seat in a passenger motor vehicle seen in the direction of travel from the left with two covers, adjustable along their length; Figure 2 shows a schematic section through the longitudinal routing of the cover shown in Figure 1 at the side on the seat back; and Figure 3 shows a physical embodiment of the cover shown schematically in Figure 1 at the side on the seat cushion.
Figure 1 shows an adjustable rear seat in a passenger motor vehicle comprising a seat cushion 2 and a seat back 1. The seat. cushion 2 is adjustable in the direction of travel (arrow a) and the seat back 1 is 4adj u stab-; e in inclination (arrow b). side adjacent to tne seat back 1. there is a 3 of the passenger motor vehicle separated by an intermediate space in this embodiment. The intermediate space between the seat back I and the C-pillar 3 is for the most part closed by a cover 4.
The one edge section of the Cover 4 or% the Seat back 1 is as shown in Figure 2 sewn to a runner 8. Th i s runner 8 comprises an elongate extruded section, which is approximately of the same 'Length as the edge section of the cover 4, and has a row of small borings in the middle for the thread. This runner 8 is adjustably mounted along its length in a guide rail 7, which is attached to the C-pillar 3 and also comprises an elongate extruded profile. This guide rail 7 can be joined to the fixed vehicle component, here the C-pillar 3, by gluing, welding, clipping or in another manner.
It is thus possible to equalise relative movements of the seat back 1 to the C-pillar 3 in the longitudinal direction of the guide rail 7, so that the cover 4 generates markedly fewer creases, which improves quality and appearance.
I n order to cope wel--L also with the ad- usi-iiient J movements in the inc1ination of the seat baclk I the 4 is made wider than would be necessary to cover the intermediate spac-e. A further possib-ility for this is a cover from an at 1east partly el. astic material, which permits a suitable reversible deformation.
A second embodiment of such a cover is shown in Figure 1 to the side of the seat cushion 2. Here an edge section of the cover 6 is joined to the fixed side covering 5 of the seat. In order to be able to equalise the seat adjustments of the seat cushion 2 in the direction of travel, rings 9 are attached to the upper edge section of the cover 6. These rings 9 can s1ide in the longitudinal direction on a rod 10, which is fastened below and to the side of the seat cushion 2 and thus prevent the cover 6 from being stretched and creasing. This rod 10 is covered in practice by the overhanging seat cushion 2 at the side.
Additionally on the edge section of the cover 6, onto which the rings 9 are attached, rubber elastic cord can lightiy take up the edge section of the cover 6 in the longitudinal direction, so that this is easily stretched in the longitudinal direction.

Or longitudinal adj ustment. With these rails 12 tne compl.ete seat -is joined to a vehicle, riot shown here. A red I - 1. - - -0 J s 'i rm2y attached to the carrier frame 11 for the seat cushion. On this rod 10 rings 9 which are firmly joined to a rubber band 13 can move. The rubber band 13 is sewn onto the upper end of a cover 6 at the side, which is for instance of leather. To the rear the rubber band 13 is joined fast to the vehicle at a connecting point 14. The lower end of the cover 6 is joined fast by a frame 15 to the vehicle, not shown. At the front of the seat cushion the upper end of the cover 6 is joined fast to the carrying frame 11 along the fastening line 16.
If the seat cushion is moved in the longitudinal direction, the rings 9 slide on the rod 10 and this prevent straining and any unwanted fold formation at the sides. In this way friction is reduced and the quality of the cover 6 is improved.
