Abstract

A combined temperature and pressure sensor is fitted to or built into a tyred vehicle wheel and adapted to sense the internal pressure and temperature of the tyre and to transmit a signal including information representative of the sensed values of pressure and temperature via wireless transmission to a remote receiver.

Description

2363463 Tyre Pressure Transceiver.
The measurement and display of vehicle weight through electronic means can only be achieved through the use of a transducer/s. Namely a device which converts the force applied by the load on the vehicle into a varying electronic output.
Nearly all such devices provide an analogue value which is then converted into a digital (binary) number. The difficulty with all transducers lies in their installation since it is difficult to place such devices on a vehicle.
At the present time every system uses these transducers at some point between the vehicle axle and the loading platform of the vehicle and as a result often incur some inaccuracy due to friction and mechanical histerysis.
The invention uses latest technology devices of minimal size and weight to enable connection of a transducer to the vehicle tyre, thereby providing the most simple means of installation. The device has the following features 1. An FM transceiver.
2. Logic circuitry.
3. An electncal milli-volt generator (uses the kinetic energy caused through the rotation of the wheel as the vehicle is driven along) 4. Low voltage rechargeable battery.
5. A pressure and temperature transducer.
6. A unique memory held identification number.
The above would be encapsulated into a very small housing (see sketch).
The invention would work in the following way and in association with the existing payload system which is the subject of our current application. (only a small amount of software changes would be required):- A. Each device will have a unique digital code. The operator will request current axle weights whereon the existing system would 'poll' each transducer on the vehicle.
B. On receiving a signal the tyre transducer will awake from a low voltage 'sleep' mode and compare the identifier before transmission of both tyre pressure and temperature.
C. The receiving system will the acknowledge receipt to allow a return to sleep mode for that transducer.
D. Using software manipulation a compensated tyre pressure can be calculated.
E. Further compensation for any non-linearity in the characteristic of the tyre in provision of pressure again-st load can also be similarly compensated by software.
F. The device could be fitted inside the wheel of the vehicle so that it could not easily be tampered.
Advantages:- 1. Totally universal application since although vehicle suspensions and configurations differ widely, every vehicle uses the pneumatic tyre.
2. The most simple method of installation and elimination for the need for any wiring.
3. Ease of use with the existing system which require only a small change to software and no hardware modification.
4. Tyre pressure information can be displayed / warned in the vehicle cabin.
5. Improved accuracy through the elimination of frictional and hysterysis losses which are inevitable with alternatively positioned transducers.
Improvements being made in the fields of transceiver and transducer devices will enable ever smaller packaging of such a device, to the point that it may be possible to anticipate the form of a revised dust cap. Existing devices are already small enough to consider packaging into the size of a cigarette packet suitable fixed to the wheel hub..
