Abstract

A thermally insulating member for a metal structure like a pipe is disclosed, the insulating member being provided with at least one electrode assembly. The electrode assembly is used to indicate the presence of an electrolyte in the vicinity of the electrode assembly, the presence of an electrolyte indicating that at least a portion of the insulating member may contain an electrolyte. The electrode assembly may be coupled to an indicator (e.g. a light emitting diode or other means) to give an indication that the insulating member contains an electrolyte. The electrode assembly might comprise an electrochemical corrosion cell and the instrumentation might comprise an electrochemical noise measuring apparatus or linear polarisation resistance measuring apparatus.
