Abstract

A golf aid 10 comprises a support that can be inserted into the ground 12 and upon which a golf club 14 is supported. Preferably the aid comprises a substantially flat plate formed with a first edge which is a tool which may be used for repairing damage to a grass surface or inserted into the ground and an opposite edge formed with a recess curved to receive a golf club shaft or grip. The first edge may be in the shape of tapering tangs forming a forked tool. Optionally the aid may include a wire brush for cleaning golf balls, a central aperture or a bottle opener and may be formed from pressed aluminium or synthetic plastics material.

Description

2362578 1 GOLF AID The present invention relates to a novel golf aid.
As aa golfer proceeds around a golf course, he needs to use a number of different clubs depending on the requirements of a particular shot, and it is therefore necessary for the golfer to carry with him a specially designed bag to hold all of the clubs which he believes he may require for the round. It may also be necessary for the golfer to rest one of these clubs on the ground before he uses it to play a shot. With certain grass conditions, this may result in the handle or shaft of the club becoming damp or soiled, which can make it inconvenient to play with. It will also be undesirable to return the soiled or damp club to the bag after the shot has been played, since it may soil the other clubs or the interior of the bag.
It is known to provide a device known as a pitch mark repairer. This device is used by a golfer to repair damage to the green or fairway caused by the club cutting or otherwise scarring the grass surface. While the pitch mark repairer functions well for its intended task, it can only be used for this task and therefore adds to the amount of equipment which a golfer 15 must carry with him while he is playing.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel golf aid to assist in reducing or substantially obviating the above identified problems.
The invention provides a golf aid which golf aid characterised in that the golf aid comprises a support for a golf club, which support can be inserted in the ground and a golf club can be 20 supported on it.
The golf aid according to the invention preferably comprises a substantially flat plate, a first edge of which is formed for insertion into the ground and an opposite edge of which is formed to receive and support the shaft of a golf club. In a preferred embodiment, the edge of the device which is formed to receive and support the shaft of a golf club is formed with 2 a curved recess, the radius of which corresponds approximately to the radius of a golf club shaft or grip.
In a preferred embodiment of the golf aid according to the invention, the golf aid comprises a dual puipose device which comprises a tool for repairing damage to a grass surface and a support for a golf club, whereby the tool can be inserted in the ground and a golf club can be supported on it.
The dual purpose device according to the invention preferably comprises a substantially flat plate, a first edge of which is formed as a tool for repairing damage to a grass surface and an opposite edge of which is formed to receive and support the shaft of a golf club. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the tool is in the shape of a pair of tapering tangs forming a forked tool and the opposite edge of the device is fbimed with a curved recess, the radius of which corresponds approximately to the radius of a golf club shaft or grip.
The third or fourth edge of the golf aid according to the invention may conveniently be provided with a brush, more preferably a wire brush, for cleaning golf balls.
The golf aid according to the invention may also conveniently be provided with a central aperture which serves to reduce the weight of the device, which aperture may also be sized and shaped so as to function as a bottle opener.
The golf aid according to the invention may be formed of any convenient material which demonstrates the required properties of light weight and rigidity. Suitable materials include aluminium, in particular pressed aluminium and plastics which may be formed by any appropriate forming method such as extrusion or moulding.
In particular, where the golf aid according to the invention is formed from a plastics material, it may be imprinted with the logo or other advertising material of a sponsoring company or other business undertaking and may be used as a promotional device. The low cost of the 3 golf aid according to the invention makes it particularly suitable for use as a promotional device.
An embodiment of a golf aid will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of an embodiment of a golf aid and Figure 2 is a close up view of the golf aid of Figure 1 in use supporting the grip of a golf club.
As can be seen from Figure 1, a golf aid shown generally at 10 comprises a substantially flat plate 2. A first edge of the plate 2 is formed as a pair of tapering tangs 4, 6 which together 10 form a forked tool. The opposite edge of the plate 2 is formed with a radiussed recess 8.
In use as a golf club support, as can be seen from Figure 2, the first edge of the pitch mark repairer 10 is inserted in the ground 12 to a sufficient depth and a golf club 14 is rested on the recess 8, the grip 16 of the club 14 being received in the recess. The end of the club remote from the grip (not shown) rests on the ground, so that the grip and shaft are kept clear of the grass.
When not in use as a golf club support, the golf aid 10 can be used as a pitch mark repairer using the tangs 4,6 to repair damaged grass.
