Abstract
236,248. Mickelwright, W. R., and Mickelwright, Ltd. Feb. 27, 1924. Controllers with rectilinear or rotary sliders. - A support for a resistance comprises a substantially rectangular block 1, Fig. 1 of refractory insulating material such as porcelain, slate or marble, having parallel grooves 2 on opposite sides and holes or recesses 3 in a plane between the planes through the two sets of grooves. The grooves on one side may in a modification make an acute angle with those on the opposite side. In the resistance unit shown in Fig. 3, two supports having all the grooves parallel are mounted so that they are spaced apart by means of rods 4 and spacing tubes 5. The holes in a plane between the grooved sides of the support pass right through the support and receive binding screws or bolts 9. A helically coiled resistance wire 7 is being held separately within a groove. When the wire passes over a support from one groove to the next it is anchored under a washer bv means of a nut 8 on one of the bolts 9. One or more additional supports may be arranged between the end ones in modified forms. Tapping wires may also be connected between the anchoring nuts to a panel so as to form a dimming switch or a starting rheostat. The anchoring nuts may form contacts for a sliding brush as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which two units are mounted parallel to each other by means of brackets 10, a brush 11 sliding on a strip 12 passing over the two sets of anchoring studs. The unit is enclosed in a protecting cage formed by end-plates 13 and two perforated covers 14, the whole being held together by rod 15 and nuts 16. To increase the range, groups of resistance units may be arranged in the form of a polygon having a brush which rotates about the centre or in the forms shown in Figs. 6 and 8. In the forms shown in these Figures the brush passes simultaneously on to the last stud of one unit and the first of the next. A unit arranged as a polygon and provided with a three-armed brush may be used as a starting or regulating resistance for a three-phase motor.
