Abstract

A toothpaste containing a lubricant or lubricants (salivary substitute / artificial saliva e.g. mucins) can alleviate dry mouth symptoms by leaving a residual quantity of lubricant within the oral cavity following tooth brushing.

Description

2361870 Dry mouth relief This invention is a toothpaste that provides
temporary relief from a dry mouth, Xerostomia is the medical term for a dry mouth. Sufferers include people on heart drugs, diabetics, alcoholics, patients undergoing radiotherapy, drug abusers, connective tissue disease sufferers, patients on antidepressants, and anxiety sufferers.
A dry mouth can cause speech and swallowing difficulties, inflamed gums, increased incidence of tooth decay, bad breath, salivary gland infection. increased oral fungal growth (candida), and loss of denture stability.
The susceptibility to xerostomia increases with age due to a histological change in the salivary gland structure, and increased drug use associated with old age. With an ageing population there is a huge demand for a solution to this problem.
Current symptomatic relief is limited. Patients must be given strict dietary advice, anti-bacterial mouthwashes and saliva supplements in the form of capsules or spray.
A toothpaste containing saliva supplements would lubricate the oral cavity and thus provide relief from a dry mouth through tooth brushing.

Claims
1. A toothpaste containing a lubricant or lubricants (salivary supplements / artificial saliva e.g. mucins) can reduce dry mouth symptoms by leaving a residual quantity of lubricant within the oral cavity following tooth brushing.
2. On using the toothpaste the lubricant/s may have an immediate or timed action.
3. The lubricant/s may exist within the toothpaste / in direct contact with the paste / as part of the formula.
4. The lubricant/s may exist separately within minute capsules in the toothpaste. These capsules can become wedged within the interproximal areas (between teeth) during brushing or adhere to the soft tissue surfaces and subsequently dissolve in the mouth releasing the lubricant/s thus expressing its effect.
