Abstract

An animal food, such as a food supplement for dogs, comprising garlic. A method of manufacture of the animal food is also provided.

Description

2361618 ANIMAL FOOD DESCREPTION This invention relates to animal food, the
word "arumal" relating herein to any species of animal, preferably mammals, with the exception of human beings.
In particular, the animal food of the invention is provided as a food supplement for dogs, such as a dog treat.
Accordingly, one aspect of the invention provides an animal food comprising garlic.
The other components of the food may include egg, liver and/or flour, with the garlic constituting the active component in the food.
Preferably, garlic Is present in an amount within the range of 0.2% to 20 5.0% by weight of the total weight of the food components.
Also, the invention provides a method of manufacturing animal food, wherein garlic is added to other components of the food.
Apart from the addition of the garlic, the manufacturing method is conventional, in that it may comprise mixing, such as blending and/or liquidising, the food components and then baking the so-mixed food components at a suitable temperature.
The garlic is preferably added in an amount within the range of 0.2% to 5.0% by weight of the total weight of the food components.
After the resulting animal food product has cooled, it may be pelletised or rendered into another suitable form, preferably granular or particulate, A_1so, it may be dusted with powdered garlic, such as dried garlic powder, possibly using a paste or other suitable adhesive for adhering the powdered garlic to the 5 food product pellets or other shapes, such as granules or particles.
Any egg which is used in the manufacturing method may be raw or in dry powder form. Similarly, the garlic may be raw or dried, for example, in particulate form and any liver may be raw or processed.
It has been found that the inventive animal food, when made by the manufacturing method therefor, with the addition of garlic, results in a product which offers life-enhancing qualities unique to the canine sector, for example, lowering of blood temperature, minimising internal and extemal parasitic infestation and assisting in alleviating respiratory ailments like coughs, colds, W cl snuffles and sinusitis- In order that the invention may be more fully understood, a preferred method of manufactunrig the inventive animal food, will now be described by 20 way of example.
EX-AWLE..
M:ETHOD OF MANUFACTURING SUPPLEMENTAL DOG FOOD Raw eggs (1.5kg), raw liver (22.5kg) and flour (22.5kg), as well as garlic (50Ogrms) prepared ftom garlic bulb (allium sativum) as the active component, were blended and liquidised in a large stainless steel vat. The blended and liquidised components were then removed from the vat and placed in suitable foil-lined containers within an oven at a pre-heated temperature of 14TC 150T and then baked for 45 minutes.
After baking, the resultant supplemental dog food product was allowed to cool and was then pelletised and dusted with garlic powder using a suitable paste as an adhesive and, subsequently, stored in suitable packaging before freezing, although freezing has been found to be not essential. The preferred amount of garlic powder used for dusting was found to be 2.5kg per metric tonne of product.
As indicated above, the garlic constituting the active component of the animal food, has been found to provide life-enhancing qualities, particularly in the canine sector, to include the lowering of blood temperature, minimising internal and external parasitic infestation and assisting in the alleviation of respiratory ailments, for example, coughs, colds, snuffles and sinusitis.
