Abstract
A drain tap washer extractor comprises a hollow body 1 having means 3, 6 for securing to a drain valve in a water tight manner, and an insertion rod 2 which can slide through the body in a water tight manner. The insertion rod has a handle 5 at one end and means 7 for extracting the washer at the other end, which preferably takes the form of a tapered thread, scraper or drill. The rod 2 preferably includes more than one seal 4 for engaging a bore in the body 1 to provide for the water tight sliding. The body 1 preferably has various threaded portions 6 allowing it to be fitted to a variety of sizes of drain tap.
Description
2361287 PLUMBING TOOL This invention relates to a drain tap washer
extractor.
Drain taps are used on all wet plumbing systems to drain the system off water by means of a hose pipe. Drain taps consist of two parts, the main body which is soldered or screwed into the system and contains the hose pipe outlet and washer seat, the second part, the guts, (An expression used by plumbers) which takes the form of a threaded shaft with a rubber washer at the end. This is screwed into the body to form the tap. Some drain taps also incorporate a gland at the end of the shaft to seal when in the open position.
Drain tap washers frequently get stuck to their seats through either poor fitting or lime scale, preventing the drainage of the system.
According to the present invention there is provided a drain tap washer extractor comprising of a hollow body, an insertion rod, and means on the body for securing a water tight seal into a drain tap. The insertion rod can to slide through the body and form a water tight seal by seats situated throughout its length. At one end the insertion rod has an appropriately formed handle and at the other means for extracting the washer.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:- Figure 1 illustrates a plan of the body and the Insertion Rod.
Figure 2 illustrates a cross section of the Washer Extractor Body and Insertion Rod.
Figure 3 illustrates a cross section of the Washer Extractor Body secured into the drain tap body.
Figure 4 illustrates a cross section of the Washer Extractor Body secured into the drain tap body with insertion rod entering to meet the washer.
Figure 5 illustrates a cross section of the Washer Extractor Body secured into the Drain Tap Body with insertion rod extracting the washer.
Referring to the drawing the Drain Tap Washer Extractor comprises a body 1 which includes various threads 6 for various sizes of drain taps.
At the end of each of the threads there are seals 3 positioned to ensure a watertight connection when screwed into a drain tap body 10 as shown in Fig: 3.
Also included is an insertion rod 2 which comprises at one end a tapered thread 7 or other means of extracting the washer e.g. scraper, drill etc, at the other end a handle 5 all along the rod there are seals 4.
In order to remove the washer 11 from its seat 12 the washer extractor body must be screwed into the drain tap body 10 a water tight seal is is then made at position A as shownlin Fig 2.
The rod is then pushed though the centre of the washer extractor body 9 by its handle 5 until it meets with the washer 11 the seals 4 seal water tight, as shown in Fig:4 a taper 8 is provided at the end of the centre hole 9,to prevent wear on the seals when entering the body When the rod is pushed through the body, more than one seal is needed on the rod to maintain a water tight seal.
The rod is then pushed and turned into the washer and the tapered thread 7 taps into the washer. The rod is then pulled back and the washer is freed from its seat 12 as shown in Fig: 5 This allows the water to flow through the drain tap and to the outlet 13 when the system is drained the drain tap washer extractor is then removed.
