Abstract

A prescription card 10 comprises a part displaying the medical prescription 16 and a means 13 for displaying indicia 14,15 that can be selectively displayed or occluded. The means 13 for displaying indicia 14,15 can be a liquid crystal display (lcd) which shows a number of months so that when the card is handed to a pharmacist, the pharmacist can check that the month is valid before cancelling it from the display. The invention allows for repeat prescriptions to be issued without reconsultating a doctor.

Description

2360977 A medical prescription card This invention relates to a medical
prescription card.
In an attempt to reduce drug wastage, Governments permit medical practitioners to prescribe Government funded drugs for the benefit of their patients only for measured consumption over a short period, generally one month. In consequence, it is necessary for medical practices to prepare repeat prescriptions regularly, on an ongoing basis, for patients who require them and the procedure is time consuming and wasteful of valuable resources.
According to the present invention, there is provided a medical prescription card comprising a substrate carrying human readable information and means for displaying a series of indicia wherein the display means is adapted, selectively, to display the indicia.
Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
In the drawings:- Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of a medical prescription card in accordance with the present invention, and Figure 2 is a cross-section on the line H - II of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown an embodiment of a medical prescription card 10 comprising a substrate 11 in the form of a rectangular sheet of plastics material having bonded theret o along a margin of one edge thereof a rectangular sheet 12 of clear plastics film material and an elongate display strip 13, the longitudinal axis of which extends parallel to the said edge. The display strip 13 comprises a series of liquid crystal cells 14 extending longitudinally of the strip 13. An upper surface of the substrate 11 has printed 2 thereon numbers 15 in the series 1' to '12', being indicative of the months of the Year from January to December inclusive, and the arrangement is such that each of the numbers 15 is located below a corresponding one of the cells 14. The liquid crystal material of the cells 14 is such that a corresponding number 15 associated with a cell 14 is occluded by the material, unless the material is subjected to a magnetic field causing the material to become irreversibly clear and the associated number 15 to become visible. The card 10 illustrated in Figure 1 shows that the months of January to July, represented by the numbers '1' to 7, have been 'cancelled' in that the corresponding cells 14 have been made clear.
A medical practitioner would be provided with a supply of cards 10, a computer and printer for printing a paper prescription, and equipment for sealing the rectangular sheet 12 of a card 10 marginally to the substrate 11 of the card 10. After a printed prescription has been prepared, the practitioner inserts the printed prescription under the sheet 12 of a card 10 and, by operating the equipment, seals the sheet 12 marginally to the substrate 11. The prescription thus is encapsulated within the card, as shown at 16.
The card 10 is intended for use in a system which would include optical character recognition apparatus located in a pharmacy. The apparatus would include means for reading the prescription 16 carried by the card 10 and means for selectively applying a magnetic field to the display strip 13 so as to change a selected cell 14 from a state in which the corresponding number 15 is occluded to a state in which it is visible.
The significance of numbers 15 of the card 10 being visible is that drugs specified in the prescription would not be dispensed if the card 10 is presented to a pharmacy during a month the corresponding number 15 of which is visible on the card 10. Thus, once drugs have been dispensed by a pharmacy in accordance with a prescription on a card 10 presented to it and the card 10 having been processed to record that transaction, the card 3 will have been modified by the apparatus such that it will not operate the apparatus until the next, or a subsequent, month.
It will be appreciated that the apparatus located at the pharmacy may be adapted to reprint the prescription, if need be, so that the prescription may be processed and/or the apparatus may be adapted to transmit data relating to the prescription for electronic processing.
It will also be appreciated that the liquid crystal cells may be adapted to occlude the corresponding numbers 15 when subjected to a magnetic field instead of being made clear when subjected to such a field.
