Abstract

A connector (1) for joining first (W1) and second (W2) board members to each other and to an underlying support (S) comprises a body portion (2) for abutting the first board member (W1). An extension (3) depends from the body portion (2) for anchoring to the underlying support(S). A spike (6) projects from the body portion (2) and is arranged to penetrate the second board member (W2) when it is urged towards the first board member (W1).

Description

2360337 P02817GB CONNECTION OF BOARD MEMBERS The invention relates to the
connection of board members, and more particularly to a connector and a method of assembling boards on a support using the connector.
It is one object of the invention to provide a connector for joining boards which is inexpensive, easy to use, and is not readily visible from the surface of the support e.g. a floor or deck. It is a further object of the invention to provide a method of connecting an array of wooden boards using the connector, which requires a minimum input of skilled labour and time and provides an attractive and safe wooden floor or deck.
According to the invention in one aspect there is provided a connector adapted to join together two elongate members in a side-by-side relation and secure them to an underlying support, the connector comprising a body portion to abut a flat wall of one of the members, the body portion having an extension shaped to be received in the support and anchor the connector thereto, a spike element projecting from the body portion and arranged to penetrate a flat wall of the second elongate member when that is urged towards the flat wall of the first member.
Preferably the body portion is generally planar.
Preferably the body portion of the connector is adapted to secure the connector to the first elongate element. This may be done using a nail or a screw, and conveniently a hole is present for this purpose.
2 Preferably the spike of the body portion is formed at a side of the body portion. More than one spike portion may be present, and the spike or spikes are located at positions where they can penetrate the second member without causing damage thereto.
The connector member is preferably made in one piece, although the invention is not limited to such a method of production.
The elongate members are preferably composed of natural or synthetic wood material. However, the invention may be applied to laminate materials and the like.
According to the invention in another aspect there is provided a method of connecting at least two elongate members to one support, the method comprising:
- positioning a first elongate member having a flat face on the support; anchoring a connector having a body portion with a projecting spike in the support and causing the connector to be abutted against a flat face of the first member; - fastening the body portion of the connector to the flat face of the elongate member; and - urging a second elongate member onto the spike to cause the spike to penetrate the member until the adjacent flat faces of the two elongate members are separated by the thickness of the connector.
i 3 In order that the invention may be well understood it will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one connector of the invention; and Figures 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D illustrate one method of the invention for connecting two elongate members.
The connector 1 as shown in Figure 1 is a one piece metal article having two main regions; a body portion 2 and an anchor portion 3 which depends from the body portion 2. The body portion 2 comprises a planar generally rectangular head piece 4. A hole 5 is present to receive a fastener such as a screw or nail- A spike 6 projects at approximately 901 from one side of the head piece 4 near the top edge 7 thereof The anchor portion 3 extends from the centre of the bottom edge 8 of the head piece 4 and takes the form of a narrow prong member 2 which tapers to a point 9. Approximately half way down the anchor portion 3, two teeth are present on either side of the prong.
As shown in Figures 2A to 2D, a connector 1 is used to locate a second length of wood W2 alongside length W1 on a support S. The length W1 is placed on the support and held thereto e.g. using nails (not shown). The connector 1 is hammered or otherwise driven into the support S at an angle to the horizontal, the anchor portion 3 leading (see Figure 2A). The head piece 4 is then urged up to abut the flat face F1 of the length W1, and is then held thereto using a screw 10. This brings the spike 6 to project generally horizontally away from the length W1 (see figure 213). Further connectors are added at 4 intervals along the length W1. The second length W2 is urged on to the spikes 6 extending from the flat face of the connector 1 using a mallet or the like (see Figure 2C) until the flat face F2 of length W2 abuts the head piece 4 of the connector, length W2 being generally parallel and close to the first wood length W1 (see Figure 2D). The spikes penetrate the material of the length W2 in the height thereof, without causing visible damage. In this way, using simple tools even an unskilled worker can align boards together to form a floor or decking which is safe and attractive.
In the embodiment shown the connector is driven into the support and connected to the first length of wood W1. It is within the scope of the invention to locate the connector at an angle and drive the connector through the length W1 into the support and then insert the screw and drive the second length W2 on to the first. In such a case the headpiece 4 need not be planar. In this way the need to separately connect the first length to the support is satisfied.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown. For example more than one spike may project from the head portion of the connector member. The head portion and the anchor portion may be detachable. There may be more than one anchor portion. The method may be applied to horizontal and vertical supports.
