Description

2360076 improved Assembly
The present invention relates to an earthing apparatus having particular, but not exclusive, utility in the automotive field. The earthing apparatus is a threaded headed earthing fastener, such as an earthing bolt or an earthing screw.
In many applications where an electrical contact may be desirable, it is often the case that a workpiece to which the fastener is in use to be connected takes the form of a metal plate having an electrically insulating coating. It will be understood that the plate may be provided for example with a coating of paint, lacquer, varnish or the like. In such cases, it is necessary in some way to remove the coating from the plate, at least in a localised area.
It is known, for example from DE 31 33 638 A1 to provide a threaded fastener in the form of an earthing bolt in which an flange of a headed portion of the fastener is provided with teeth which extend from a shank of the bolt to an outer surface of the headed portion. When the bolt is set in an opening in a workpiece having an electrically insulating coating such as a paint coating, the teeth act to remove the coating to establish an electrical connection between the workpiece and the. earthing bolt.
However, it can be a problem that the cleared surface of the workpiece can become contaminated, for example by removed paint, and the security of the electrical connection may become compromised. Alternatively, given the harsh environment in which automotive earthing bolts can operate, the security of the electrical connection may become compromised by environmental degradation of the workpiece or the teeth.
It is an advantage of the present invention that it provides a solution to the problems noted above.
According to a first aspect of the present invention a fastener comprises a shank and a head, the shank having a threaded portion, the head being located at a first end of the shank, the headed portion having a flange extending from the shank to an outer edge of the head and cutting means extending from the flange between the shank and the outer edge, characterised 5 in that sealing means are provided on the flange to at least one side of the cutting means.
Preferably, the sealing means are provided on each side of the cutting means.
Preferably, the cutting means extend circumferentially about the flange.
Preferably retaining means are provided to retain the sealing means in position on the flange.
Preferably, a recess or recesses are provided on the flange to receive the sealing means.
Preferably, the sealing means comprises at least one 0 ring. Alternatively, the sealing means comprises a dry sealant applied to control rings on the flange.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a schematic side section of a first embodiment of a fastener according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows an end view of the embodiment of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a schematic side section of a second embodiment of a fastener according to the present invention; and Figure 4 shows an end view of the embodiment of Figure 3.
Referring first to Figure 1 and Figure 2, there can be seen a first embodiment of a fastener according to the present invention.
A fastener 2 comprises a shank 4 and a head portion 6. The shank 4 has a threaded portion 8 extending along its length. The head portion 6 is located at a first end 10 of the shank 4, the head portion 6 having an flange 12 extending from the shank 4 to an outer edge 14 of the head portion 6.
Cutting means 16 extend from the flange 12 between the shank 4 and the outer edge 14.
Conveniently the cutting means takes the form of a ridge or a series of teeth. The cutting means 16 may be formed integrally with the head portion 6 of the fastener 2, for example by casting. Alternatively, the cutting means 16 may be formed by removal of material from a fastener blank, for example by machining to form a plurality of raised teeth.
Sealing means 18 in the form of 0 rings 20,22 are provided on the flange 12 of the head portion 6. In the illustrated embodiment a first 0 ring 20 is shown between the cutting means 16 and the shank 4, and a second 0 ring 22 is shown between the cutting means 16 and the outer edge 14 of the head portion 6.
The flange 12 of the head portion 6 may be provided with suitably located recesses 24 to 15aid in the location of the 0 rings 20,22.
In use, the earthing fastener 2 is inserted into an opening of a suitable size in a workpiece having a electrically insulated covering. The opening is provided with a screw thread adapted to be engaged by the threaded portion 8 of the shank 4 of the fastener 2. The screw thread is may typically formed integrally with the workpiece. As the threaded fastener is urged into the opening, the flange 12 of the head portion 6 of the fastener approaches the electrically insulated covering.
As the threaded fastener approaches a set position, the cutting means 16 remove the electrically insulated covering from a localised region of the workpiece in the region of the cutting means. The cutting means subsequently engages the material of the workpiece at this localised region to establish an electrical connection between the earthing connector and the workpiece. At the same thne as the electrically insulated covering is being removed from the workpiece, the 0 rings 20,22 are compressed between the recesses 24 formed in the flange 12 of the head portion 6 and the electrically insulated covering of the workpiece to establish seals on each side of the cutting means, thereby preventing contamination or degradation of the connection between the fastener and the workpiece.
Referring now to Figure 3 and Figure 4, there can be seen a second embodiment of a fastener according to the present invention.
A fastener 32 comprises a shank 34 and a head portion 36. The shank 34 has a threaded 10portion 38 extending along its length. The head portion 36 is located at a first end 40 of the shank 34, the head portion 36 having an flange 42 extending from the shank 34 to an outer edge 44 of the head portion 36.
Cutting means 46 extend from the flange 42 between the shank 34 and the outer edge 44. Control rings are formed on the flange 42 to each side of the cutting means.
15Sealing means 48 in the form of a dry seal sealant 50 is provided on the flange 42 of the head portion 36. In the illustrated embodiment the dry sealant extends away from the cutting means 46 to each side of the cutting means, that is towards the shank 34, and towards the outer edge 44 of the head portion 36, i.e. in the region of the control rings.
A protective covering 52 covers the cutting means 46 and the dry sealant 50.
As in the previous embodiment, in use, the earthing fastener 32 is inserted into an opening of a suitable size in a workpiece having a electrically insulated covering. The opening is provided with a screw thread adapted to be engaged by the threaded portion 38 of the shank 34 of the fastener 32. As the threaded fastener is urged into the opening, the flange 42 of the head portion 36 of the fastener approaches the electrically insulated covering.
As the threaded fastener approaches a set position, the cutting means 46 cuts through the protective covering 52 to expose the dry sealant and concurrently remove the electrically insulated covering from a localised region of the workpiece in the region of the cutting means. The cutting means subsequently engages the material of the workpiece at this 5 localised region to establish an electrical connection between the earthing connector and the workpiece. The dry sealant thereby forms a sealing barrier between the cutting means, the electrically insulated covering and the flange to each side of the cutting means, thereby preventing contamination or degradation of the connection between the fastener and the workpiece.
