Abstract

A chair (7) includes a shelf (5) and book/magazine box (6) mounted on the left and right hand side. Both items are removable and interchangeable by means of a standardised fitting featuring 'tongues' (1) on the items and 'lugs' (2) on the frame (4) of the chair (7). The fitting can be utilised to accommodate further accessories.

DESCRIPTION

CHAIR SHELF AND BOX FITTING This invention relates to a standard fireside type chair or settee that incorporates a removable side shelf and book/magazine box. Both components fit to the left and right hand sides of the chair and are interchangeable by virtue of a standardised drop-in tongue and lug fitting.

With most standard chairs the occupant who wishes to handle a cup of tea or plate of food invariably has to be within reach of a table or shelf to put down such items. With the chair having a shelf and storage box attached, such items can easily be put down or stored and will be readily accessible when needed. The design also affords an opportunity for space saving e.g. in a care home where maybe ten people are sitting in such chairs in one room, a table per chair can be dispensed with and the chair occupants can access a cup or plate without the need for assistance.

The invention allows the occupant of the chair to have accessible shelf space and book/magazine storage space very close at hand so that he/she does not have to extricate themselves from the chair to access such items.

The invention provides a shelf of reasonable dimensions to accommodate items of food and drink for one person whereby it can be removed when not required and/or swapped from left to right hand side, or vice versa, to suit the occupant's needs. The box is interchangeable with the shelf and can also be removed when not required.

The shelf (5) and box (6) are made of wood with the 'tongue' (1) fashioned from the body of the item or created by means of the insertion of a dowel or separate screwed in section. Both accessories feature a tongue (1) at each end which slots into a metal, or wood, or integrally shaped 'lug' (2) fitted to, or part of, the frame (4) of the chair (7). The shelf (5) rests in the lugs and two bracket panels (3) rest against the frame of the chair to keep it flat. The body of the box (6) rests against the frame (4) of the chair.

Claims

1. A chair which features a shelf and/or a book/magazine storage box, or any further accessories, fitted to the left or right hand side of the chair by means of a standardised fitting.

2. The shelf and box, and any other accessory utilising the same fixing, are both removable and interchangeable.

3. A chair fixing as in claim 1. Where the shelf and box and any other accessory include tongue' (1) fixings which slot into 'lugs' (2) fitted to, or are integral to, the frame of the chair.

4. A chair, as in claim 1, that features lugs (2) as an integral part of the frame of the chair or are attached features of the frame whereby they can be utilised for any purpose in respect of attaching accessories or optional extras.

5. A chair, as claimed in any preceding claim, where the frame is made of wood, metal, plastic or any combination of these.

6. A chair, as claimed in any preceding claim, where the lugs (2) on the frame are made in metal, wood or plastic and are a separate attachment or an integral shaping of the frame.

7. A chair, as claimed in any preceding claim, where the accessory shelf, box and any other components are made from wood, metal, plastic, MDF, Laminate or any combination of these materials.
