Abstract

The apparatus comprises a feed tray 2, an outfeed tray 4, with a space 7 between them, a cutting roller 12 with multiple blades 14 and two heated laminating rollers 20 as well as a waste deflector 13. In use a single sheet of material passes from the feed tray, to the cutting roller, which cuts a series of parallel slots 16 in the sheet. Waste material from the cutting operation is deflected into a bin (not shown) by deflector 13. The slotted sheet is then laminated on both faces by means of rollers 20, which are continuously supplied with a suitable plastic film. The rollers may be positioned so that a portion of the complete sheet is laminated before cutting commences and in an alternative embodiment separate laminating and heating rollers are provided. After lamination the sheet is cut transversely to the slots to produce a number of foldable panelled strips.

Description

2359275 1 LAMINATING METHOD AND APPARATUS The present invention relates to
a method of and apparatus for producing laminated foldable strips including a plurality of spaced panels.
Laminated foldable strips including a plurality of opaque panels, which panels are spaced from one another to leave gaps across which extend only the transparent films between which the opaque panels are laminated, have many uses, in being readily foldable and highly durable owing to the protection provided to the panels by the films. Such foldable strips are therefore very suitable for use, for example, as menus in restaurants, as multi-leaf instruction leaflets which can be repeatedly handled and folded to present different faces of different panels for inspection, and as transport timetables which can be folded down to a size which can conveniently be carried in a purse, wallet or pocket and which can be unfolded to present either side of any of the panels for reading information therefrom.
EP-A-0997271 discloses a method of accurately spacing the opaque panels of a laminated foldable strip. The method comprises the steps of die cutting a sheet of opaque material to include a plurality of spaced parallel slits which do not extend completely thereacross and define a plurality of spaced panels therebetween, with the edge portions of the sheet retaining the panels at the desired spacing, laminating the sheet between plastics films, and guillotining the edge portions of the sheet beyond the ends of the slits to remove the same. Such a method is highly effective, but since only one strip can be formed at a time is comparatively slow and therefore unduly expensive.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a method of producing laminated foldable strips including a plurality of spaced panels, comprising the steps of. transporting a t, sheet of printed material including first and second surfaces; feeding the sheet over a cutter to cut a plurality of slits, each having a predeten-ninable width, in the sheet in the direction of transport; laminating a laminate film to each surface of the sheet to form a 11-, 1 - 1 1 2 laminated sheet; and cutting the laminated sheet in a direction transverse to the slits to form a plurality of foldable strips.
Preferably, the cutter is a cutting roller rotatable about an axis transverse to direction of transport of the sheet.
More preferably, the cutting roller includes a plurality of spaced cutter blades for cutting the slits in the sheet.
Preferably, a portion of the sheet is laminated before the slits are completely cut in the sheet.
Preferably, the cutting step comprises the step of guillotining the sheet.
1 1 ' - ' ' l Preferably, the sheet transportation step comprises the step of transporting a plurality of sheets successively.
1 Preferably,, the sheet is an opaque material.
Preferably, the laminate films are plastics films.
11 The present invention also provides an apparatus for producing laminated foldable strips including a plurality of spaced panels, comprising: a sheet transporter for transporting a sheet of printed material including first and second surfaces; a first cutter for cutting a plurality of slits, each havin a predeterminable width, in the sheet 1 9 in the direction of transport; a laminator for laminating a laminate film to each surface of the sheet to form a laminated sheet; and a second cutter for cutting the laminated t sheet in a direction transverse to the slits to form a plurality of foldable strips.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described hereinbelow by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
1 Figure 1 schematically illustrates a fragmentary perspective view from one side and C> above of an apparatus for producing a laminated foldable strip in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 schernatically illustrates a fragmentary perspective view from the other side and above of the apparatus of Figure 1; and Figure ') illustrates a fragmentary plan view of a forward end, having regard to the Zn direction of transport, of a laminated sheet.
The apparatus comprises an infeed table 2 and an outfeed table 4 over which sheets 6 are transported in the direction of arrows A. The outfeed edge of the infeed table 2 and the infeed edge of the outfeed table 4 are spaced such as to define a region 7 in which both surfaces of each sheet 6 are exposed. The infeed table 2 includes lateral guides 8, 9 at the lateral edges thereof to guide the transport of the sheets 6. In this embodiment, as illustrated in Figure 3, the sheets 6 are sheets of glazed paper which are printed on both surfaces and have an overall width W of 55.4 cm and an overall length L of 61 cm.
The apparatus further comprises a guide roller 10 disposed above the infeed table 2 to guide the transport of the sheets 6 and a transport roller 11 disposed above the infeed table 2, in this embodiment downstream of the guide roller 10, to transport the sheets 6.
The apparatus further comprises a cutting roller 12 which is disposed above the outfeed end of the infeed table 2 and a deflector plate 13 which is disposed beneath the outfeed end of the infeed table 2. The cuttinc, roller 12 includes a plurality of cutters 14 spaced therealong, each of the cutters 14 comprising two spaced knife edges, in this embodiment spaced 2 mm apart, to cut slits 16 in the sheets 6, with the waste cut from the slits 16 in each of the sheets 6 being deflected downwardly into a waste bin (not illustrated) by the deflector plate 13.
4 4 The apparatus further comprises first and second laminating rollers 18, 20 which are disposed at the region 7 between the infeed and outfeed tables 2, 4 and between which is sandwiched each sheet 6 as slit and first and second plastics films 22, 24, in this embodiment transparent plastics films, which are fed from supply rolls (not illustrated). The plastic films 22, 24 have a heat-activated adhesive thereon which, when activated,. bonds the plastics films 227 24 to the respective sheets 6 to form a laminated sheet 26. In this embodiment the laminating rollers 18, 20 are heated to activate the adhesive. In an alternative embodiment the apparatus can include heating rollers downstream of the laminating rollers 18, 20 to activate the adhesive. In this embodiment the laminating rollers 18, 20 are located relative to the cutting roller 12 such that a portion of each sheet 6 is laminated before being completely slit. Each of the sheets 6 in the laminated sheet 26 comprises a plurality of parallel strips 6a-j which are laminated between the plastics films 22, 24.
The apparatus further comprises a storage roll 28 for storing the laminated sheet 26 for subsequent guillotining.
In a subsequent operation. the laminated sheet 26 is guillotined, laterally and at the lateral edges thereof, at successive ones of the sheets 6 to provide a plurality of. in this embodiment six,, foldable strips S from each sheet 6, each comprising a plurality of, in this embodiment ten, panels P as provided by sections of the strips 6a-j of the slit sheet 6. The portions of the laminated sheet 26 removed by guillotining are illustrated in hashed section in Figure 3. The strips S are then folded either by roll folding or by zig-zag folding.
In this embodiment each of the panels P has a width w of 8.6 em and a length of 5 em, with the surfaces of each of the panels P having a surface area of 43) em 2. In this embodiment each strip S includes ten panels P, giving a total surface area for display 2 of printed material of 860 em. In this embodiment each of the panels P has a spacing C1 of 2 mm, but, if desired, one of the end panels P can instead be spaced from the adjacent panel P by a slightly wider spacing than the other panels P, for example a 1 1 ' - - 1 4 spacing of 3 mm, to allow concertina folding and foldover of the end panel P to allow the strip S to be secured in position when folded.
The panels P may bear information, for example, regarding airline telephone numbers, check-in details, arrivals details, connecting flight details and sales information for different classes of airline travel on one surface and airline schedules on the other surface. By folding from one end, with the folds between the panels P, a compact arrangement of planar unfolded panels can be provided which can readily be stored in a wallet, purse or pocket of a user and unfolded for consultation repeatedly without any risk of tearing at the folds or the loss of readable material adjacent the folds.
Finally. it will be understood that the present invention has been described in its preferred embodiment and can be modified in many different ways without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
