Abstract

This invention relates to a locking device for the securing of up and over garage doors. Two of the locking devices to be fined within the garage, one to each side of the garage door. A locking device will consist of the following;<BR> Two mild steel brackets, the keep (1) and the latch holder (2). The latch (3) being operated by the turning of the shaft (4) when the key (5) is applied to the locking mechanism. The shaft (4) is welded to the latch, and retained within the latch bracket by means of a shouldered section (6) flat washers (7) to each side of the latch to enable free movement. To aid security a metal plate (8) is fitted to inside face of door frame, and will protrude so as to cover the gap between edge of garage door and door frame. The shaft section (4) fits within a metal sleeve (9) which passes through the door frame. The latch bracket (1) in conjunction with metal plate (8) is secured to the door frame. The latch bracket (2) is secured to the garage door after reinforcing the returned edge with metal box section. The raising and lowering of the latch (3) is by means of a key (5) which enters the sleeve (9) and via a locking mechanism actuate the shaft (4) the open end of the metal sleeve to be covered by an escutcheon (11). Alternative keys (5) and locking mechanisms fitted dependant upon level of security required.

Description

1 2358887 SECURITY LOCIaNG DEVICE FOR UP & OVER GARAGE DOORS.
This invention relates to a locking device, and in particular but not exclusively to the securing of up and over garage doors. Two locking devices to be fitted within the garage, one to each side of the up and over garage door, and positioned within twelve inches of the finished floor level. A locking device will consist of the following; Two mild steel brackets one of which will be the keep (1) the other bracket (2) will carry the latch. The latch (3) being operated by a turning motion of the shaft section (4) when the locking mechanism is deactivated by the misertion. and turning of the key (5). The latch (3) being welded to the shaft section (4). The shaft section (4) is retained within the latch bracket (2) by means of a shouldered section (6). Flat washer's (7) to be fitted to the shaft section (4) one to each side of the latch to enable free movement. As a security measure a metal plate (8) will be fitted to the inside face of the doorframe, prior to the fitting of the latch (2). This metal plate (8) to protrude so as to cover the gap between the edge of the garage door and the door frame, this to prevent access to the latch ftom the exterior side of the door. The shaft section (4) to be entered into a metal sleeve (9) fitted within an opening bored through the doorframe. The metal plate (8) and then the latch bracket (2) to be secured to the inside face of the doorframe by means of four hexagonal headed screws (10). The latch bracket (1) the keep, to be fitted to the returned edge of the garage door in line with the latch bracket (2) and secured with four dome headed coach bolts (11), after reinforcing the returned edge of the garage door with a five inch long metal box section (12). The raising and lowering of the latch (3) to be by means of a key (5) which enters the metal sleeve (9) on the exterior side of the frame, and through a locking mechanism actuates the shaft section (4). The openend of the metal sleeve on the exterior side of the door frame to be covered and protected by a plastic escutcheon (13). Alternative keys (5) and locking mechanisms to be fitted dependant upon level of security required.
