Abstract

A method of coating a surface with a polymer layer, which method comprises exposing said surface to a plasma comprising one or more organic monomeric compounds, at least one of which comprises two carbon-carbon double bonds, so as to form a layer of cross-linked polymer on said surface. Suitable organic compounds include compounds of formula (I) where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, and R<SP>6</SP> are all independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl or aryl optionally substituted by halo; and Z is a bridging group. The method is suitable for applying oil and/or water repellent coatings onto substrates such as fabrics.
