Abstract
An exercise machine has a padded bench 1 which can run up and down poles 3, which are vertical in use. The machine may have a main frame 4 which is horizontal in use, and a sub-frame 9 hingedly attached to the main frame, pivoting about tube 13. The poles 3 can pivot relative to the sub-frame 9 about point 10. In use, when in a folded flat position (fig 9), the user can secure themselves to the slidable bench 1, and a helper can rotate the poles 3 to the vertical position about point 10 (fig 3) or 13 (fig 6), depending on the exercise to be performed. The poles 3 may have handles 2 at one end of the sliding bench track. In the position with the bench 1 above the handles 2, the user can perform hand-stand shoulder presses whilst secured to the sliding bench 1 to work the triceps, deltoids and trapezius muscles, without needing careful balance. In the other position, with the handles 2 above the bench 1 (fig 6), the user can pull themselves up to exercise the lats and biceps. The user can work against their own body weight and use a removable additional weight loading device 8. The user can be secured to the bench with seat belts.
Description
2358592 Shoulder. Back & Arm Exerciser The invention relates to a
shoulder, back and arm exercising machine that uses the user's bodyweight (plus additional weights, if necessary) as resistance. It is mounted on a steel frame that is foldable, so it can alternate between exercising biceps and lattisimus dorsi flats) muscles, to exercising triceps, deltoids and trapezius muscles.
Equipment like this has only been developed to exercise the lats and biceps, but suffer from the disadvantage that additional weights cannot be accommodated, as well as not being able to exercise the triceps, deltoids and trapezius muscles.
What this invention does is to allow the user to exercise those aforementioned muscle groups easily and safely to build and tone muscles as well as to improve coordination and balance.
This invention has a padded bench area with "racing harness"-style seatbelts to hold the user in place thus eliminating the balance factor which makes the performance of hand-stand shoulder pressing (to exercise triceps, deltoids and trapezius muscles) so difficult to begin with. This means that the user does not have to have an extraordinary sense of balance to perform that exercise. The padded bench area has sleeves, which move up and down poles, which allow both types of exercise to be performed. This invention has two frames; a main-frame and a sub-frame that are essential.
Preferably, this invention will have the padded bench area made from vinyl and foam, with a wood backing and seatbelts made from nylon and steel. The rest of the invention is made from steel.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanied drawings in which: Fig.1 shows the front view of the exercise machine in the triceps, deltoid and trapezius exercising position (muscles relaxed); Fig.2 as above but with muscles contracted; Fig.3 side view of Fig. 1; Fig.4 side view of Fig.2; Fig.5 side view when machine is folded flat; Fig.6 side view of exercise machine in the biceps and lats exercising position (muscles relaxed); Fig.7 as above but with muscles contracted; Fig.8 aerial view of Fig. 1; Fig.9 aerial view of Fig.5; Fig. 10 aerial view of Fig.6; Fig. 11 two-point perspective view of extra weight loading device, displaying how it fits.
Key to the figures:
1. Padded bench area with "racing harness"-style seatbelts 2. Handle bars (3 either side) 3. Poles 4. Main-frame 5. Safety stopper 6. Sleeve 7. Pin A 2 8. Extra Weight loading device 9. Sub-frame 10. Hinge point A 11. Pin B 12. Cross bar 13. Hinge point B (circular tube) 14. Main-frame stabilisers 15. Pin B attachment area Explanation of some of the components: Main-frame; this is component 4. This has components 11,14. and 15. incorporated within it. It gives the exercise machine rigidity.
Sub-frame; this is component 9. This has components 5., 10. and 3. incorporated on it. It is the combination of the main-frame and the subframe that allows the two different types of exercise to be performed.
Sleeves; these are represented by component 6. These are connected to component 1. and allows it to move up and down the poles (component 1).
Pin A; this is component 7. It is actually 2 pins (1 either side). They secure component 3. to component 5.
Pin B; this is component 11. It is actually 2 pins (1 either side). These are thicker and longer than the pins in Pin A. These secure component 9. to component 15.
Hinge point A; this is component 10. This stems from component 9. (subframe), and serves as a hinge point for the poles (component 1). It allows the triceps, deltoids and trapezius muscles to be exercised.
Hinge point B; this is component 13. This is a circular tube that runs through component 9. (sub-frame) and attaches it with component 4. (mainframe). Because it is circular, it acts as a "hinge". It allows the biceps and the lats to be exercised.
Extra weight loading device; this is component 8. and is illustrated by Fig.1 1. This is an L-shaped construction with a steel square frame tube of 2.5 cm in diameter. This can be slid in and out of its bracket, so that it can be removed (so the equipment can be folded flat) and used for both exercises.
To use the shoulder, back and arm exerciser, the user lies down on the padded bench area (component I.) when the machine is folded flat (see Fig. 5 & Fig.9), and then straps himself/herself in. Then an exercise partner would tilt the machine on hinge point A (component 10.) or hinge point B (component 13.), depending on which exercise needs to be performed. The machine is then secured in plane by either pin A (component 7.) or pin B (component 1 l.) by the exercise partner. This is paramount in terms of safety, 3 because exercises of this nature should not be performed without another person present in case of any difficulty arising. The shoulder, back and arm exerciser ensures that a training partner has to be present.
The user can then adapt his/her training technique for comfort or to exercise different muscle fibres of the same groups by adjusting the grip positioning on the handle bars (component 2.). Additional weights can also be added if necessary by using the extra weight loading device (component 8.).

Claims (6)
1. An exercise machine comprising of a padded bench which moves along a plurality of poles, a main-frame and a sub-frame, in which when in use, said mainframe is horizontal and has hingedly attached to it said subframe via a steel tube, and the plurality of poles are hingedly attached to said sub-frame, such that pivotal movement of the sub-frame relative to the main-ftame can present the poles vertically, whereby a first end of the poles is above a second end of the poles, and pivotal movement of the poles about the sub-frame can present the poles vertically with the second end of the poles above the first end.
Dependent Claims Claims dependent on claim 1:
2. An exercise machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the padded bench has seat belts to secure the user.
3. An exercise machine as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the machine has a detachable extra weight loading device.
4. An exercise machine as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the machine can be folded flat for storage.
5. An exercise machine as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the machine is made of steel, vinyl and wood.
6. An exercise machine as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the machine" has two poles.
