Abstract

A child-resistant cardboard or similar container has a lid (4) which telescopes over a base (3). Internal flaps (8, 10) on the base and lid side walls abut at their edges (11, 12) when one tries to remove the lid. The abutment is released, and removal of the lid permitted, by pressing in the side walls of the base. Medial fold lines (14) in the base (3) may facilitate such pressing.

Description

2358391 71690.607 CONTAINERS This invention relates to containers made of
cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, and has as its object to provide an improved child-resistant container, for medicines for
example.
According to the invention there is provided a container made of cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, comprising two tubular, relatively telescopic, parts which together define the body of the container and which are movable apart in telescopic fashion to open the same, and having at least one pair of internal flaps, one on each of said parts, which are arranged to abut together edge to edge when the parts are moved apart as aforesaid, so as to stop such opening movement, at least one of said telescopic parts being manually deformable inwardly or outwardly to release said abutment and thereby permit opening of the container.
With such an arrangement, the intention is that a child will not deduce that it is necessary to deform one of the telescopic parts in a particular manner in order to open the container.
Preferably the inner one of said telescopic parts is manually deformable inwardly as aforesaid.
Preferably the said flaps are hingedly connected to side walls of the said telescopic parts.
The invention is adequately operable if only one said pair of flaps is provided. Preferably however two pairs are provided, on opposite side walls, for added security.
The scope of the invention also extends to a pair of blanks for making a container as set forth above.
An embodiment of the invention will now be 2 described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figures 1 and 2 are plan views of respective cardboard blanks for making the two parts of a containEf according to the invention; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the assembled container in its fully closed condition; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the container, with a portion broken away, when its parts have been moved partly towards the open condition; Figure 5 illustrates the manual action needed to continue opening the container; and Figure 6 shows the container fully open.
Referring to the drawings, cardboard blanks 1 and are for making the two tubular body parts 3 and 4, in this embodiment the base 3 and a removable lid 4, of a ii two-part child-resistant container, for example for 1 medicinal tablets. The manner in which the blanks folded and glued to make up the two container parts is conventional and need not be described. It will be noted that the base part 3 has a crash lock base formed by flaps 5, and an open top. The lid 4 has a fixed top formed by flaps 6, and an open bottom. The parts are dimensioned for the lid to be a slidable telescopic fit over the base, as clearly shown in Figures 3 to 6.
Opposite side walls 7 of the base 3 carry hinged flaps 8 which are folded outwardly through 180' in use, to lie against their associated side walls. opposite side walls 9 of the lid 4 are provided with similar flaps 10 which are folded inwardly. As a result, when the lid 4 is moved upwardly relative to the base 3, i.e. in the opening direction for removal, the pairs of internal flaps 8 and 10 come into abutment at their respective edges 11 and 12 and thereby stop any further upward movement of the lid beyond the position shown in Figure 4. This arrangement renders the container chil (1 resistant.
3 Referring now particularly to Figure 5, removal of the lid is achieved by pressing inwardly the side walls 13 of the base, i.e. those walls not carrying the flaps 8, so as to draw the walls 7 slightly closer together, this deformation being sufficient for abutment between the pairs of flaps 8 and 10 to be temporarily released, so that the lid can then be lifted off as shown in Figure 6. Vertical medial fold lines 14 are formed in the walls 13 to facilitate such deformation. It will of course be appreciated that when the lid is replaced the flaps 10 thereon ride over the flaps 8 on the base so as again to stop removal of the lid in the same manner as already described.
