Abstract

A carton incorporates a cord 1 so as to facilitate easy opening of the carton. The cord is preferably formed as a loop. The cord 1 may function as a handle prior to opening.

Description

1 2358179 THE EASY PULL OPENING CORD The invention relates to a device
facilitating the easy opening of cartons, such as tetrapack.
Dairy products of a hard or semi-hard nature have been packaged in tetrapack or other cardboard containers such as tetra-brick or carton paper packages for decades, but suffer from the disadvantage that these packages are often very difficult to open without the aid of scissors or a knife.
The object of this invention is to eliminate the need or use of knives, scissors and other sharp implements, and provide a simple, safe and selfcontained method of opening such containers.
Accordingly, the invention consists of a cord appropriately positioned inside the packaging. The cord is pulled by hand so as to open the carton after assembly.
The cord can be made of metal, fibre or plastics material or any other material or combination of materials strong enough to open the packaging. The material or materials must also be hygienic.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described. with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 shows an elevated view of a carton with the invention incorporated inside. FIGURE 2 shows an overview of the carton.
2 FIGURE 3 3 shows the first step in opening the carton. FIGURE 4 shows the second step. FIGURE 5 shows the third step. FIGURE 6 shows the final step in opening the carton. FIGURE 7 is a cross-section section showing the position of the cord within the joint. FIGURE 8 is an example of an alternative way in which the cord may be incorporated into the carton.
As shown in Figure 1, the cord 1 is incorporated into the carton 3 as delineated by the heavy striped lines. Where it is outside the carton 3 it is marked by a heavy line. The cord 1 runs closely inside the edge of the join 2 in the top side of the carton 3.
Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 demonstrate the steps by which the carton 3 is opened.
In Figure 3) the flaps 4 at the side of the carton are raised by hand until they are level with the top side of the carton 3.
In Figure 4, the top side of the carton 3 is raised either by manipulating the carton 3 itself or by pulling the cord 1 directly upwards.
Figure 5 demonstrates the opening of the carton 3. The cord has been pulled away to separate the joint 2 between points A and B. 3 Figure 6 demonstrates the open carton 3. The joint 2 has been separated. To complete the opening of the carton to enable the contents to be removed, the separated sides of the joint 2 are simply pulled apart by hand. The carton is then fully open.
Figure 7 demonstrates a cross-section of the joint. The cord 1 acts on the joint 2 when pulled upwards and will pull apart the joint 2 between points A and B. The joint 2 should be strong enough for the cord 1 to be used as a handle, but to give way when pulled to open.
Figure 8 demonstrates an alternative way of incorporating the cord into a carton. The cord 1 remains almost entirely inside the joint 2, except where it sticks out of the carton to enable a person to pull it upwards. Once the flaps 4 have been raised, the cord 1 can be pulled upwards and out to facilitate the easy opening of the carton 3. In all other respects, the other steps are as described above.
The cord 1 can be a single continuous ring, as shown in the diagram; attached to some shape that can be grasped; or looped at one end so that it can be pulled. The cord 1 could also be formed into another shape on the outside of the carton, for example, to make it easy to grasp or carry. It could also conceivably be placed along anotherjoint 5 or other plane within the package. The cord 1 can be of any form in cross-section that allows it to act on the joint 2 or 5 with sufficient strength.
