Abstract
The antenna 2 of the radiotelephone 1 protrudes from the lower mouthpiece end of the handset, opposite to the speaker 3. This arrangement reduces a user's exposure to electromagnetic radiation. The antenna may be moveable by means of any combination of bends or slidable, pivotal or ball joints. In an alternative embodiment the antenna may be entirely within the handset.
Description
2358103 IMPROVEMENTS IN RADIO TELEPHONES This invention is applicable to
many categories of radio telephones of which mobile telephones and chordless telephones are two examples.
Mobile telephones are well known. Their description here is kept to the mininiurn necessary to define the present invention.
In mobile telephones, the front face of the hand set is substantially rectangular with some modifications such as rounded corners and partial ovality. On the top part of the face there is usually a set of holes behind which is the speaker. The antenna or part thereof protrudes from the upper end of the hand set.
Consequently when the speaker is held against the user's ear, the antenna is very near tile user's head, giving rise to the concern about brain damage by radio waves.
There is. an accessory known as the "hands-free kif' that eliminates tile risk by keeping the antenna away from the user's head during a telephone call. However, the awkwardness of this spoils the quick and convenient use of a mobile telephone. Users tend to abandon tile kit foi. convenience irrespective of risks.
The object of the present invention is to cornbine safety with convenience by providing a mobile telephone featuring a radical separation of the speaker and the antenna.
The invention in its simplest form provides a mobile telephone with the speaker conventionally located on the top part of the face and the antenna, or part thereof, protruding from the lower end of the hand set.
In another embodiment of the invention the antenna may be totally enclosed in the]land set. Such an antenna would be characterised by being fed signals firorn the duplexer at a point above the major part of the radiating portion of the antenna.
Other possible embodiments of the invention may feature an antenna, or part thereof, protruding from any location of the hand set, characterised by the extreme tip of the antenna being lower than the speaker. This can be achieved by an antenna embodying one or more bends or movable joints or any combination thereof. said Joints may be slidable, pivotal or ball type.
In chordless telephones, the base unit is plugged into a land line. The hand set can be carried away and remain in radio contact with the base unit over short, domestic distances. In appearance the hand set is very similar to a mobile telephone, and in particular the location of the antenna relative to the speaker is identical to a mobile telephone.
The embodiments hitherto described as applicable to a mobile telephone are equally applicable to the hand set of a chordless telephone and some hand portable two way radios.
Two embodiments of the invention will now be described with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 is an embodiment with a protruding antenna. Figure 2 is an embodiment with an internal antenna.
Figure 1 shows the front face of a mobile telephone hand set 1. The antenna 2 protrudes from the lower end of the hand set. The speaker holes 3 are on the top part of the face. For further clarity the display screen 4 and the array of buttons 5 are also shown.
Figure 2 is a cut away drawing to show a schematic view of the internal antenna 2 and tile duplexer 6. The signals firorn the duplexer 6 are fed to the antenna 2 at the point 7 above the major part of the radiating portion of the antenna.
Claims (8)
1. A radio telephone wherein the antenna or part thereof protrudes from the lower end of tile hand set.
2. A radio telephone wherein the speaker and the antenna are located at substantially opposite ends of the hand set.
3. A radio telephone hand set wherein the extreme tip of the antenna is lower than the speaker.
4. A radio telephone hand set wherein a movable antenna can be manipulated to bring the extreme tip of the antenna to a point lower than the speaker.
5. A radio telephone hand set according to Clairn 4 wherein the antenna embodies any combination of bends and slidable, pivotal or ball type joints.
6. A radio telephone hand set wherein the antenna is fed with signals frorn the duplexer at a point above the major part of the radiating portion of the antenna.
7. A radio telephone hand set according to Claim 6 wherein the antenna is totally enclosed in tile hand set.
8. A radio telephone hand set substantially as herein described and illustrated in tile accompanying drawings.
