Abstract

235,777. Piening, C., and Heineken, M. F. W. Nov. 25, 1924. Granaries. - Granular food material is contained in a closed receptacle 10 having a perforated bottom 11 and two concentric pipes 12, 13 extending through the receptacle from top to bottom. The outer pipe 12 is perforated and opens into the lower half of a perforated cowl 14 that is divided by a transverse partition 14<a>. The inner pipe 13 provides communication between a chamber formed between the bottom 11 of the receptacle and a floor 10<a> and the upper half of the cowl, being carried beyond the partition to form an annular chamber that is filled with material to absorb moisture from air. Perforated cylinders 11<b> extend upwards into the receptacle which may be subdivided by partition 10<c>. Filling and discharge openings 10<d>, 10<c> are provided. Air passes down the central pipe 13 to the space between the floors 10<a>, 11, flows through the perforations in the floor 11 and after passing through the grain escapes through the pipe 12. Fans may be fitted to circulate the air or a cowl as shown in Fig. 7 may be used. In this form the cowl is provided with a wind-vane 15b which can rotate on a central pin 15<c> resting on a support 15d. Shields connected to the vane are adapted to direct air into the pipe 13 and out of the pipe 14. A pipe 16 leading below a baffle in the space between the two bottoms of the receptacle may admit additional air or some gaseous disinfecting agent such as prussic acid or formaldehyde. In a modification the receptacle is arranged within a building with the central pipe 13 extending through the roof into the outer air, the pipe 12 opening into the space within the building. The bottom of the receptacle may be inclined and fitted with valves for controlling the delivery of the material from the compartments to discharge pipes, and the valve casing may be so constructed that air or disinfectant may be admitted to the compartments from below.
