Abstract
In a cellular communications system, a mobile is in communication with a first base station via a radio channel. The mobile may be located by measuring signal propagation delays between itself and the first base station, and between itself and a second and third surrounding base station. If, whilst the first base station is transmitting, the mobile is unable to perform the necessary measurements with the second and third base stations, the first base station will temporarily cease transmitting on the radio channel to enable the mobile to measure the propagation time of a signals between itself and the second and third base stations. Particularly suited to CDMA communications systems in which transmission powers are normally kept to a minimum.
