Description
2356779 COMMUNICATION APPARATUS HAVING A BROWSER, WEB SERVER,
COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND COMMUNICATION METHOD THEREOF
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a communication apparatus having a browser, a web server, a Communication system and a communication method thereof. More particularly, it relates to a communication apparatus having a browser, a web server, a communication system and a communication method thereof capable of communicating data including an image. 2. Description of the Related Art
First, a conventional communication system will be described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2. The conventional communication system has a portable terminal apparatus, a browser executed on the portable terminal apparatus, a web server used for an internet implerfientation and a network connecting the portable_ terminal apparatus to the web server. The portable terminal apparatus acquires a home page from the web server in the below-mentioned sequential ogeration. Here, a home page is intended to have its ordinary meaning and refers to a graphical display transmitted over a network from one computer to another, and may also 25 be known by other names, such as a web page. The home I page can be written based upon a Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) and can include an image. These will be understood to be examples and may take other forms and could be written in other languages.
First, as shown in FIG. 1, a portable t - erminal apparatus 101 transmits a homepage request signal to a web server 102 through a browser 101A (step 1) - That is, a uniform resource locator (URL) identifying a home page requested by the portable terminal apparatus 101 is transmitted from the portable terminal apparatus 101 to the web server 102 through the browser 101A as the homepage request signal. Next, the web server 102 transmits HTML data of the requested home page to the portable terminal apparatus 101 (step 2) The HTML data 15 sent to the portable terminal apparatus 101 is shown in FIG. 2A. Subsequently, the portable terminal apparatus 101 transmits an.image request signal to the web server 102 in order to acquire an image data contained in the received HTML data of the homepage (step 3). The web server 102 transmits the requested image data to the terminal apparatus 101 (step 4). The transmitted image data is shown in FIG. 2B. in this conventional communication system, the portable terminal apparatus 101 acquires all of image data irrespective of the fact that 25 the image contained in the home page is required, or not 2 required by the user. An acquisition of the image data not required by the user of the portable terminal apparatus 101 wastes electric power consumed by the portable terminal apparatus 101, and therefore shorten the operation time thereof. Further, there are many images which are not directly related to the contents of the home page, and also are not useful for or desired by users. As a consequence, because a large amount of image data not required by the user is acquired, traffic on a 10 transmission path is increased unnecessarily.
Also, another conventional communication system is disclosed in Japanese Laid-open Patent Application No. 10-24-0604. In this conventional communication system, as to image data stored in a cache memory of a terminal device, a request signal for acquiring the image data is transmitted, wherein time information indicative of the time when the image data is stored in the cache memory is added to the request signal. And then, only when the requested image data located on the server is updated after the time defined by the time information, is the image data transmitted to the terminal device.
In this conventional communication system, all the transmitted images are temporarily stored in the cache memory and a user of the terminal device cannot identify 25 an image that is not required by the user itself.
3 since the image data stored in the cache memory is rewritten every time the image data is newly acquired, when the storage capacity of this cache memory is small, the stored image data is immediately deleted. Thus, a 5 number of operations for acquiring image data are execiked, and therefore, traffic on a transmission path is not decreased because the deleted image data is acquired again even though it has not been updated. Such an image data acquisition operation causes the utilization time of the terminal device to be shortened. Also, since the amount of data in image data is larger than the amount of data in TEXT data and HTML data, the storage capacity of such a required cache memory has to be large. However, because such storage capacity is limited in a portable terminal apparatus such as a portable/mobile telephone, these conventional technologies are not useful in the field of portable terminals.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore an ob ject of the preferred embodi ment of the present invention to provide a communication apparatus having a browser, a web server, a communication system and a com:munica tion method thereof capable of communicating an image data without shortening the utilization time of the communication apparatus.

As shown in FIG. 3, a communication system according to a first embodiment of the present invention includes a portable terminal apparatus 1 such as a mobile telephone or a personal data assistant (PDA) which includes a browser 1A, a web server 2, and a communication network 3 used to connect the portable terminal apparatus- I to the web server 2. The communication network 3 is established by at least one of a wired circuit and a radio circuit.
Referring.to FIG. 4, the portable terminal apparatus 1 comprises an image acquisition information setting unit 11, a time information setting unit 12 and the browser 1A. The image acquisition information setting unit 11 sets image acquisition information with respect to each image contained in a home page written by a markup 7 language such as a hyper text markup language (HTML) a compact-hyper text markup language (C-HTML), a wireless markup language (WML), a extensible markup language (XML) and the like. The image acquisition information is set by a user of the portable terminal apparatus 1 through the image acquisition information setting unit 11 with respect to an image contained in a homepage, when the user determines that there is no need to acquire that image when subsequently accessing the homepage. Thus, operation of the image acquisition information setting unit 11 is executed by a user's specified operation. Such a specified operation may be a depression of a specified key mounted on the portable terminal apparatus 1 by the user. The user can depress the specified key while confirming the image displayed on a display device (not shown). The time information setting unit 12 sets time information. indicative of the time when the image acquisition information is set by the image acquisition information setting unit 11.
The browser 1A comprises a memory 13, a checking unit 14, a receiving unit 15 and a transmitting unit 16.
The image acquisition information set by the image acquisition information setting unit 11 and the time information set by the time information setting unit 12 are stored in the memory 13. As shown in FIG. 5, a 8 uniform resource locator (URL) identifying the image which is not required by the user is set as the image acquisition information in accordance with the time information indicative of the time when the image acquisition information is set. The checking unit 14 checks whether or not the URL identifying the image contained in the home page is coincident with the URL which is stored in the memory 13 as the image acquisition information, when the home page is received by the receiving unit 15. The receiving unit 15 receives the homepage and the image contained in the home page transmitted from the web server 2 through the communication network 3.. The transmitting unit 16 transmits a homepage request signal for requesting the web server 2 to transmit the homepage and an image request signal for requesting the web-.server 2 to transmit the image contained in the homepage. The homepage request signal and the image request signal include a URL -identifying the homepage and the image, respectively. Further, the transmitting unit 16 transmits a check signal including the image acquisition information indicative of the URL identifying the image which is not required by the user and the corresponding time information.
As shown'in FIG. 6, the web server 2 comprises a 9 receiving unit 21 for receiving the homepage request signal, the image request signal and the check signal from the Portable terminal apparatus 1, a memory 22 for temporarily or permanently storing a plurality of.

Next, operation of the communication system according to the first embodiment of the present invention will-be discussed with reference to FIG. 7.
The portable terminal apparatus 1 transmits a homepage request signal to the web server 2 for acquiring a homepage (step 101) The homepage request signal includes a URL identifying the requested homepage. The web server 2 receives the homepage request signal, reads the requested homepage identified by the URL from the memory 22 and transmits the homepage to the portable terminal apparatus 1 (step 102) When the portable terminal apparatus 1 receives the homepage, it is determined in the checking unit 14 whether or not a URL of an image contained in the home page transmitted from the web server 2 is coincident with a URL which is stored in the memory 13 as an image acquisition information (step 103). If the URL identifying the image contained in the transmitted homepage is not coincident with the stored URL, that is, the URL identifying the image contained in the transmitted homepage is not stored in the memory 13 as the image acquisition information, the portable terminal apparatus 1 transmits an image request signal to the web server 2 for acquiring the image contained in the transmitted homepage (step 104). The 1() image request signal includes the URL identifying the image contained in the transmitted home'page. When the web. server 2 receives the image request signal from the portable terminal apparatus 1, the web server 2 reads the requested image identified by the URL included in the image request signal from the memory 22 and transmits the requested image to the portable server I (step 10S).
On the other hand, in step 103, if the URL of the image contained in the homepage transmitted from the web server 2 is coincident with the URL stored in the memory 13, the portable terminal apparatus 1 transmits a check signal to the web server 2 (step 106). The check signal includes the stored URL and the time information indicative of the time when the URL is stored. When the web server 2 receives the check signal from the portable terminal apparatus 1, it is determined in the control 11 unit 24 whether or not the image contained in the homepage has been updated after the time indicated by the time information contained in the check signal (step 10 7)'. if the image is not updated after the time, the web server 2 transmits a non- transmission signal in lieu of the image contained in the homepage, wherein the image is not transmitted to the portable terminal apparatus 1 (step 108) When the portable terminal apparatus 1 receives the non- transmission signal, it is determined whether or not another image is contained in the transmitted homepage from the web server 2 (step 111) if another image is not contained in the transmitted homepage, this procedure is completed (E ND). If another image is contained in the transmitted homepage, the 15 procedure returns to step 103.
In step 107, if the image was updated after the time identified by the time information contained in the check signal transmitted from the portable terminal apparatus 1 to the web server 2, the web server 2 transmits the 'updateidimage to the portable terminal apparatus 1 (step 109).
When the portable terminal apparatus 1 receives the requested image transmitted in step 105 or the updated image transmitted in step 109 from the web server 2, the image acquisition information setting unit 11 of the 12 portable terminal apparatus I sets image acquisition information. The image acquisition information is set with.respect to the requested image or the updated image in accordance with the time information set by the time information setting unit 12, if the transmitted requested image or the transmitted updated image is not required by a user of the portable terminal apparatus after this instance of access of the homepage (step 110) The image acquisition information is preferably set by the u ser through a specified key operation while the user confin, the image which is displayed.
After that, it is determined whether or not another image is contained in the transmitted homepage from the web server 2 (step 111). If another image is not contained in the transmitted homepage, this procedure is completed (END). if anoth er image is contained in the transmitted homepage,. the procedure returns to step 103.
In accordance with the above-described first embodiment of the present invention, since the image 20 whidh is not required by the user of the portable -terminal apparatus is not received by the portable terminal apparatus, power consumption of this portable terminal apparatus can be reduced and the utilization time of the portable terminal apparatus can be extended.
Also, since an image unnecessary to the user is not saved in a cache memory, a memory region of the cache memory employed in the portable terminal apparatus can be effectively utilized. As a result, traffic on a transmission path can be lowered. Also, if an image contained in a homepage is updated, the portable terminal apparatus can certainly acquire the updated image even if the user does not require the image before the image is updated.
Next, a second embodiment of the present invention 10 will be discussed.
Referring to FIG. 8, a portable terminal apparatus 30 comprises a cache memory 38 having an automatic overwrite prohibit region 38A where no automatic overwrite operation can be done, and an automatic overwrite available region 38B where an automatic overwrite operation can be done. The portable terminal apparatus 30 also includes an image registering unit 37 for registering an image in either the automatic overwrite prohibit region 38A or the automatic overwrite available region 38B of the cache memory 38. Only when a user of the portable terminal apparatus 30 executes a specified key operation for registering an image in the automatic overwrite prohibit region 38A, is the image registered therein. The user preferably registers an image which is contained in a home page that is 14 frequently acquired by the portable terminal apparatus 30. The regist ered image in the automatic overwrite prohibit region 38A can not be deleted without executing a specified key operation by the user.
The portable terminal apparatus 30 further comprises an image. registering information setting unit 31, a time registering information setting unit 32 and the browser 30A. The image registering information setting unit 31 sets image registering information with respect to each image registered in the cache memory 38. The image registering information indicates whether or not each of the images is registered in the automatic overwrite prohibit region 38A. The time registering information setting unit 32 sets time registering information indicative of the time when the image registering information is set by the image registering information setting unit 31, that is, when an image is registered in the automatic overwrite prohibit region 38A.
The browser 30A comprises a memory 33, a checking unit 34, a receiving unit 35 and a transmitting unit 36.
The image registering information set by the image registering information setting unit 31 and the time registering information set by the time registering information setting unit 32 are stored in the memory 33.
A uniform resource locator (URL) identifying the image which is registered in the automatic overwrite prohibit region 38A is set as the image registering information in accordance with the time registering information indicative of the time when the image registering information is set. The checking unit 34 checks whether or not the URL identifying the image contained in the home page is coincident with the URL which is stored in the memory 33 as the image registering information, when the home page is received by the receiving unit 35 from 10 the web server 2. The receiving unit 35 -receives the homepage and the image contained in the home page, which are transmitted from the web server 2. The transmitting unit 36 transmits a homepage request signal for requesting the web server 2 to transmit the homepage and an image request signal for requesting the web server 2 to transmit the image contained in the homepage. The homepage request signal and the image request signal include a URL identifying the homepage and the image, respectively. Further, the transmitting unit 36 transmits a check signal including the image registering information indicative of the URL identifying the image and the corresponding time information. The web server 2 comprises elements essentially the same as the elements shown in FIG. 6. 25 Next, operation of the communication system 16 I according to the second embodiment of the present invention will be discussed with reference to FIG. 9. The portable terminal apparatus 30 transmits a homepage request signal including a URL identifying a 5 homepage to the web server 2 for acquiring a homepage (step 201). The web server 2 receives the homepage request signal, reads the requested homepage identified by the URL from the memory 22 and transmits the homepage to the portable terminal apparatus 30 (step 202). When the portable terminal apparatus receives the homepage from the web server 2, it is determined in the checking unit 34 whether or not a URL identifying an image contained in the home page transmitted from the web server 2 is coincident with a URL which is stored in the memory 33 as image registering information (step 203). An image identified by the stored URL is registered in the automatic overwrite prohibit region 38A of the. cachememory 38. If the URL identifying the image contained in the transmitted homepage is not coincident with the stored URL, that is, the URL identifying the image contained in the transmitted homepage is not stored in the memory 33 as the image registering information, the portable terminal apparatus 30 transmits an image request signal including the URL identifying the image contained in the transmitted homepage to the web server 2 for 17 acquiring the image contained in the transmitted homepage (step 204) When the web server 2 receives the image request signal from the portable terminal apparatus 30, the web server 2 reads the requested image identified by the URL f-rom the memory 22 and transmits the requested image to the portable terminal apparatus (step 205) on the other hand, in step 203, if the URL identifying the image contained in the homepage transmitted from the web server 2 is coincident with the URL stored in the memory 33, the portable terminal apparatus 30 transmits a 'check signal to the web server 2 (step 206). When the web server 2 receives the check signal from the portable terminal apparatus 30, it is determined in the control unit 24 whether or not the image contained in the homepage has been updated after the time indicated by the time information contained in the check signal, (step 207) If the image has not been updated after the time, the web server 2 transmits a non transmission signal in lieu of the image contained in. the homepage, wherein the image is not transmitted to the portable terminal apparatus 30 (step 208). When the portable terminal apparatus 30 receives the nontransmission signal, it is determined whether or not another image is contained in the transmitted homepage from the web server 2. (step 211). If another image is 18 not contained in the transmitted homepage, this procedure is completed (END) If another image is contained in the transmitted homepage, the procedure returns to step 203.
In step 207, if the image was updated after the time indicated by the time information contained in the check signal transmitted from the portable terminal apparatus 30 to the web server 2, the web server 2 transmits the updated image to the portable terminal apparatus 30 (step 209).
When the portable terminal apparatus 30 receives the requested image transmitted in step 205 or the updated image transmitted in step 209 from the web server 2, the image registering information setting unit 31 of the portable terminal apparatus 30 sets image registering information with respect'to the requested image or the updated image in accordance with the time information set by the time information setting unit 32, if necessary to the user (step 210).
After that, it is determined whether or not another.
image is contained in the homepage transmitted from the web server 2 (step 211) If another image is not contained in the transmitted homepage, this procedure is completed (END) If another image is contained in the transmitted homepage, the procedure returns to step 203.
Since images frequently required by the user are not 19 deleted f rom the cache memory, the portable terminal apparatus can avoid an operation where the same image is received many times. As a result, its power consumption can be reduced and its utilization time can be extended.
The invention may be embodied in other specific, forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristiCs thereof. The present invention embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
Each feature disclosed in this specification (which term includes the claims) and/or shown in the drawings may be incorporated in the invention independently of other disclosed and/or illustrated features.
The text of the abstract filed herewith is repeated here as part of the specification.
A homepage and an image contained in the homepage are received by a receiving unit. An operation specified by a user of a portable terminal apparatus is executed, whereby a locator, such as a URL, identifying the image which is not required by the user is stored in a memory.
