Description

1 2356705 Measuring Ruler
DESCRIPTION
Technical field
The invention relates to a measuring ruler.
Background
Measuring rulers are well known measuring devices that comprise of a straight rod with measurements printed on the rod. They are used for the accurate measurement of straight surfaces.
However, it is difficult to measure beyond the length of the rod accurately. To do this the position of the far end of the rod is often marked on the surface, the front end of the rod is then moved to the mark and the remainder of the measurement is taken.
According to the present invention there is provided a conventional measuring ruler but with a sliding device on the rod which can slide along the rod. Thus enabling distances to be measured by moving the sliding device to the far end of the rod, then holding the mark in a fixed position on the surface and then pushing the rod through the device to make the next measurement. This can be repeated and the fixed lengths counted until the required distance has been measured.
Example
The specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure I shows, in perspective, the measuring ruler identifying the key features.
Figure 2 shows, in perspective, a sliding device or other attachment that can slide along the rod.
Figure 3 shows, in elevation, the lower part of the sliding device indicating how the bar can change in position.
Figure 4 illustrates the use of the measuring ruler by way of an elevation showing the sliding device being moved to the far end of the rod and the front end of the rod being held against the comer of a wall.
Figure 5 illustrates the next stage of measurement from the position show in figure 4; i.e. the sliding device is being held in position and the rod is being pushed through the sliding device.
Figure 6 illustrates the next stage of measurement from the position show in figure 5; i.e. the front end of the rod is being held and the sliding device is ready to be moved along the rod to the far end for the next measurement.
Figure 7 illustrates the final measurement from a given position. In this example the measurement is 3600mm.
I Referring to the drawing, the measuring ruler comprises the following:
- A rod '10' - Measurements on the rod'l F - A sliding device or other attachment that can move along the rod '12' - A projection at each end of the rod to rest on surfaces '13' - A projection at the base of the sliding device to rest on surfaces '14'. - A clear screen on the top of the sliding device to enable measurements to be viewed '15'.
- A bar on the sliding device '16', preventing the sliding device from sliding off the end of the rod. The bar can alter position enabling the sliding device to line up exactly in the centre of the projections on the rod '13'.
In order to measure a distance of say 3600mm, the rod, which has a length of say I 000mm, is positioned with the front end against the first point of measurement (in this example, the corner of a wall). The sliding device is extended to the far end of the rod (see figure 4). The sliding device is then held in position 1000mm from the first point and the rod is pushed through the sliding device to reach 2000mm. from the original point. The sliding device is again moved to the far end of the rod, held in position and the rod pushed through the sliding device again to reach 3000mm from the original point (see figures 5&6). The sliding device is again moved to the far end of the rod, held in position and the rod moved through the sliding device to a position of 600mm from the far end. This is measured by reading the measurement on the rod at the centre point of the sliding device.
The measurement is three full lengths of the rod, which equates to 3000mm plus 600mm equals 3600mm. Thus measurements can be taken by counting 1, 2, 3 = 3m. 3m+ 600mm 3600mm.
