Abstract
An air return register forming part of an air recirculation system (not shown) comprises a casing 1, a filter element 2, a fresh air inlet 9 and air vents 10. Fresh air is drawn into the casing through inlet 9, passes through filter element 2, and out through vents 10. Below the register the fresh air mixes with existing air for recirculation. The air then passes through vents 10 into the casing, through the filter element 2 (on the other side of a separating wall 4,5) and out through outlets 7 and 8, which are connected to air distribution units (not shown). To replace the filter element 2, latch 11 is undone, and the bottom frame 3 of the casing is pivoted about hinge 6 to provide access. The air recirculation system may include heating and cooling coils, fans, and heat exchangers. If the recirculation system is off, no air is drawn off from outlets 7 and 8, but fresh air is drawn in and fills the area below the register. If no fresh air is drawn in, air below the register is drawn in for recirculation.
Description
2356359 Patent Application of Albert Robert Lowes for MULTIPURPOSE AIR
RETURN REGISTER.
Inventors Number a Q C FIELD OF THE INVENTION. This invention relates to a air re-circulation system with filtration, it can include air conditioning, a fan coil, heating or cooling coils, or heat exchangers to recover heat from expelled air.
DESCRIPTION OF PRIOR ART. Prior air systems use return registers only to collect air to be re-circulated, occasionally a filter is included to filter the re-circulated air. Fresh air feeds have separate filter boxes. Fan coils and air conditioners have separate filters, In ducted units these can be difficult to change,
OBJECTS AND ADVANTAGES OF THE INVENTION. Accordingly, besides the objects and advantages of eliminating separate filter housings, this invention provides filtration of the re-circulated air, filtration of the fresh air feed, also providing a register for collection of the recirculated air, mixing of fresh air with re-circulated air, and provides an easily changed filter for both fresh air and re-circulated air. Fresh air with filtration can still be provided even if the re-circulation system is off, If this system is used in place of an air handling unit, the heating and cooling coils together with a fan is all that is required.
SUIRY OF THE INVENTION WITH OBJECTS. A general object of the invention is to make changing the fresh air filter and the re-circulating air filter a simple operation. This is accomplished by using a single filter to provide both functions, and locating it in the return air grille where it can be easily accessed, and replaced. Combining several fimctions in one unit, means that the system can be more compact. and it shortens the time needed to install the system.
DESCREPTION OF THE DRAWING. Figure I is a schematic diagram of the MULTIPURPOSE AIR RETURN REGISTER incorporating the principles of the invention.
Reference numerals in the drawing.
I Case of air return register. 2 Filter. 3 Bottom frame. 4 Holding bar. 5 Case separator. 6 Hinge.
7 Spigot. 8 Spigot. 9 Spigot. 10 Air Vents I I Latch DESCRIPTION OF TBE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT.
Fig 1, shows a Multipurpose Air Return Register according to the invention, the preferred embodiment works by, fresh air flows though Spigot 9, into Case 1, Case Separator 5, causes the air to flow though Filter 2, into the Bottom Frame 3, air flows though Air Vents 10, and is drawn together with extra air though the Air Vents 10, then though Filter 2 to Spigot 7 or 8, these Spigots can be connected to one or more units drawing the air for distribution, if no air is drawn from Spigot 7 or 8 any fresh air that flows will fill the area below the Register, if fresh air is prevented from flowing, air below the unit will be drawn in, for re-circulation, holding bar 4 presses the filter 2 against separator 5 preventing air from the spigot 9 by-passing the filter, likewise air from below the unit will pass though Filter 2 to flow out of Spigots 7 or 8, the Filter 2, can be changed by undoing Latch 11, and opening the Frame 3, pivoting about ffinge 6, to provide an opening to remove, or replace Filter 2. Filter 2, will under all conditions prevent any insects from travelling in via the fresh air conduit.

Claims (3)
- I claimI A return air register with a means to introduce ftesh air to mix with the re-circulated air containing a means to filter both air flows.
- 2 A return air register as clamed in claim I where the filter for ftesh air, and the filter for re-circulated air can be changed though a single access.
- 3 A return air register as claimed in claim I and 2 that contains a means that enables a single filter element to similtainiusly filter a fresh air flow, and a recirculated air flow.3
