Abstract

A folding portable back support is provided which can be used with any chair to provide an ergonomic seating posture. The support comprises a seat portion 1 and a back support portion 2 connected together by a hinge 5. In use, the angle between the two portions is 110 degrees. Each portion of the support may comprise a plastic base 3, 4 with a upholstered foam cushion 1, 2.

Description

2356136 THEBACKBUDDY This invention relates to a portable device which
converts any chair or seating into a fully ergonomical seating posture by tilting any seat to 110 degrees by a wedge and a supporting back support all in one as stated by the Health and Safety Act of 1992.
Through our evolution development the human spine has been developed mechanically for standing and moving in an erect posture and not for sitting.
Increasingly, through technical advancement such as the advent of computers, television and other sitting past times our lives are spent at work and at home in a sedentary mode.
This has resulted in an increase in back pain which is now in epidemic proportions and a major expenditure to industry through loss of work and to our health service budget.
Medical research has provided conclusive evidence that sitting in a nonergonomic seat can increase the weight load through the lower back through alteration of the spinal mechanips by nearly 100 %. This can cause back and even neck pain by putting undue stress to, ligamentous structures, intervertebral discs and muscles, Medical evidence also demonstrates, that not only the back may suffer but that incorrect seating also compresses the lower abdominal organs which can increase the risk of poor digestion and restrict blood circulation. It is also medically well documented that sitting incorrectly over a long period of time, such as a sedentary worker, will increase the risk of developing early osteoarthritic changes of the spine.
There are expensive ergonomically designed chairs which have a tilt facility, that tilt the seating angle to I 10 degrees and even simple wedges and back supports that can be applied to correct the seating posture and hence prevent back pain etc.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an ergonomic wedge and back support all in one, which not only converts any seating to be fully ergonomic but it is also lightweight and portable.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure I shows a typical layout of the invention.
Figure 2 shows the invention in carrying mode.
Figure 3 shows the invention in use on a typical office seat with the person in a correct posture compared with the same seat without the invention in place.
Referring to the drawings, figure I shows in perspective, the invention, consisting of an upholstered foam wedge ( number I) and back support ( number 2) suitably attached to 6 21 a moulded plastic base (number 3) and back support ( number 4) which articulates by a hinge ( number 5) to an angle of I 10 degrees.
Figure 2, shows the invention in a typically folded mode complete with a carrying handle (number 5).
Figure 3, demonstrates the comparison between a correct sitting posture using the invention and the incorrect sitting posture minus the invention.

Claims (1)

  1. THE BACK BUDDY- CLAIMS
The invention ( Back Buddy) is an adjustable back support and wedged seating all in one, which is portable and lightweight.
The invention produces a seating angle of 110 degrees which when in use, forward tilts the pelvis, which in turn reduces increased weight load through the, musculo skeletal structure of the spine by correcting spinal posture. Additionally, the invention had an adjustable back support to aid in maintaining the correct seating posture.
The invention not only prevents neck and back pain as a result of sitting incorrectly, it also reduces abdominal compression and will prevent osteoarthritic changes in the low back as a result of sitting in a nonergonomical seat.
