Abstract
A device for carrying large sheets or boards, such as MDF or plasterboard, comprises a strap g attached to a support shoe, the support shoe having a front lip x, to prevent the boards slipping off, a back plate y and a supporting base. The length of the strap may be adjustable, by a buckle for instance and the shoe may be fitted with a soft, protective insert to prevent damage to the board being carried.
Description
2355685 BOARD LIFTER Page I This invention is a small hand-tool designed
to ease the lifting of potentialy heavy sheet materials.
Since the 1980s man-made sheet materials have become more and more popular in the construction industry and for IDIY'. With the advent of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF), the average weight of such materials has also increased, with a standard sized 25mm thick sheet weighing approx. 80kg, sheets are becoming difficult to lift, and are creating the potential for back injuries. The new tool described within will obviate the need to bend to floor level in order to pass one I s hand beneath the bottom edge of an upright-stacked sheet then struggle to stand upright again lifting the weighty building board. Employers are now obliged to protect their employees from injury, and this device may assist in their endeavors.
The device consists of a simple strong & durable hand-sized carrying shoe, being open ended and hook-shaped, with a slot to accommodate a soft and flexible strap suitable for wrapping around the wrist & hand of the user.
A full description follows, in which reference is made to the drawing laid out on page 5.
Figure 1 shows an isometric view of the device, with the strapping passing through the closed slot.
Figure 2 shows the front elevation Figure 3 shows a side elevation BOARD LIFTER Page 2 Referring to the drawing (Page 5) the device comprises a rigid 'L ' section shoe of dimensions suitable for carrying plaster and timber-based board without causing damage to the edges. This component can be made from plastics/nylon, or steel/light alloy, but must be durable and able to withstand rough handling on a construction site.
The small front upstand(x) must be deep enough to safely retain the sheet material being lifted/carried, but not so deep as to hinder the tools' use.
The larger rear face(y) includes a slot, which may be de-burred, through which the carrying strap passes. The strap(g) should be of a width, flexibility, and strength to provide a comfortable and safe means of manually lifting/carrying sheet material, (which can weigh around 80kgs or more).
It is envisaged that one, or a number of boards would be stacked against a wall or solid item, and stood upon at least two battens laid on the ground. The lower front upstand may be passed underneath one or two boards as desired, lifted to retain the board, and by means of the strap, the operative may walk away with the board without once bending his or her back.
Dimensions a: between 65mm - 170mm (optimum dimension 100mm) b: between 40mm. - 100mm (optimum dimension 70mm) C: between 12mm - 45mm (optimum dimension 40mm) d: between 5mm - 25mm (optimum dimension 14mm) e: between 12mm. - 60mm (optimum dimension 30mm) f: between lmm - 7mm (dependant upon material used) g: Strap. The ideal would be a man-made webbing strong enough to fulfil the task, and comfortable in use. This may or may not be adjustable in length.
