Description

2355277
Title of the Invention
Cutter for road surfaces Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a cutter comprising a rotary drum carrying, peripherally, a plurality of cutter segments, and relates to such segments.
Background of the Invention
Reflecting road studs usually require, after completion of road surfacing operations, the excavation of a (usually) rectangular receiving recess of reasonably accurate dimensions appropriate to the type and style of stud being fitted, to house a base portion of the stud, with the stud usually being secured by an epoxy adhesive. In geographical areas subject to snow, the use of snow ploughs has frequently ploughed not only the snow but also the road studs from the road surface, or at the minimum has damaged or loosened road studs.
In the USA, a road stud (also known as a retro-reflective marker) that can tolerate a snow plough blade has been developed by Stimsonite Corporation but this requires a relatively complex receiving recess being basically, an arcuate depression (which is generally "H"-shaped in plan, comprising a central portion cut to one radius), bounded by two parallel lateral kerfs cut at a greater radius, to be cut into a road surface. Such depression is cut by a rotary tool comprising multiple outer and inner blades ganged together. Such blades were however designed for slotting or slitting operations in concrete or asphalt - typically on roads and pavements - and under ideal conditions such blades can cut a suitable depression within acceptable tolerances. However, as such blades are relatively flexible, the above described array is prone to debris penetration or build-up between the blades, such that the blades become splayed apart and a satisfactory arcuate depression cannot be cut and requires hand or power tool finishing with resultant loss of tolerance control, as adherence to tolerances lies 2 solely within the differing skill of different operators, and in a road stud fitting programme, thousands of depressions are required.
Object of the Invention A basic object of the invention is the provision of firstly a cutter for producing as a one- step operation, a road surface depression, to tight dimensional tolerances, and secondly of segments of such a cutter.
Summary of a First Aspect of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a rotary cutter comprising:
i. a power drivable body member, ii. a plurality of replaceable inserts secured peripherally around said body member, each comprising a central portion with a projecting wing at each end of the central portion, iii. at least one hard material cutter segment carried by the central portion whereby the or each segment of the central portion is capable of cutting an arcuately concave depression to a first radius, and iv. at least one hard material cutter segment carried by each of the two outer wings, whereby the segments of each outer wing are capable of cutting two parallel boundary grooves to each lateral side of the depression, which grooves are deeper than the depression, being cut to a second, greater radius than that of the depression.
Summary of a Second Aspect of the Invention
According to a second aspect of the invention, of independent significance, there is provided a replaceable insert suitable for use with a cutter in accordance with the first aspect, comprising a central portion with a projecting wing at each end, and at least one hard material 3 cutter segment carried by the central portion and also by each wing, whereby the central portion is capable of cutting an arcuately concave depression to a first radius, and the two outer wings are capable of cutting boundary grooves deeper than the depression, at a second, greater radius.
Preferred Features of the Various Aspects of the Invention The cutter segments are diamond impregnated.
The cutter segments are secured to the insert by brazing.
Each wing of the insert carries one segment.
The central portion of the insert carries a plurality of segments.
The central portion of the insert carries four segments.
A series of inserts with differently offset or staggered segments are provided to achieve a required lacing, being typically three inserts, so that the inserts are fitted, 1,2,3, 1,2,3 etc one behind the other in the direction of rotation.
The cutter is provided with 24 inserts at 150 spacing.
Each insert has a planar base to seat on a flat that is machined into the exterior periphery of a mounting ring.
Two spaced-apart, plain holes intersect each flat, so that two radially extending securing studs can engage two tapped holes in the base of each insert.
Different dowels or keys are provided, so that eg insert 1 can only be fitted on flat 1 etc.
The mounting ring is provided with a plurality of tapped axial holes eg 12 holes at 300 spacing, whereby a side plate may be secured by bolts to each opposite side of the mounting ring.
Each side plate has a co-axial, central aperture surrounded by a plurality of six plain holes at 600 spacing.
A drive hub, comprising two end spigots, each to pass through the central aperture of 4 one side plate, and a pair of spaced apart, circumferential flanges, each provided with six tapped holes, whereby six studs pass through the holes of the side plates to engage a tapped hole of an adjacent hub flange, carries the end plates and thereby the mounting ring and inserts.
The hub has an internal bore and key way for drivable mounting on a powered drive arbour of a machine.
Brief description of the drawings
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rotary cutter in accordance with the invention, the top half of the figure showing internal features of the cutter, and the bottom half showing external features; Figure 2 is an end elevation of Figure 1, the top half being in section and showing internal features, and the bottom half being external features; Figure 3 is a development of the external periphery of the cutter of Figures 1 and 2; Figures 4, 5 and 6 are respectively a front elevation, an end elevation and a plan view of a segment in accordance with the second aspect of the invention showing first locations of inserts; and Figures 7, 8 and 9 correspond to Figures 4, 5 and 6, but show second locations of inserts.
Detailed description of the drawings
A rotary cutter 1 in accordance with the first aspect of the invention comprises a drive hub 2 with a keyway 3 to fit on a powered drive arbour (not shown) of a cutting machine (not shown).
The hub 2 has two end spigots 4 each passing through a hole 5 in one of two spaced apart side plates 6 which are secured to the hub 2 by countersunk bolts 7 passing into tapped holes 8 in a pair of spaced-apart circumferential flanges 9 of the hub 2.
Each side plate 6 has a circumferential shoulder 10 on which is seated a closure ring 11 which closes off the hollow interior 12 of the cutter 1. The ring 11 is provided with an array of axially extending tapped holes 13 to receive countersunk bolts 14 to secure each side plate 6 to opposite side edges of the ring 11. The components 4, 6 and 11 constitute a power drivable body member 25. The ring 11 is also provided with an array of pairs of radial plain holes 15, by which twenty four inserts 16 are secured around the periphery of the cutter 1 by pairs of bolts 17 passing into tapped holes 18 in each insert 16.
Each insert 16 is in accordance with the second aspect of the invention, and comprises a central portion 19 with a projecting wing 20 at each end of the central portion. One diamond impregnated cutter segment 21 is brazed onto outermost surface 22 of each wing 20, while four spaced-apart diamond impregnated cutter segments 23 are brazed onto surface 24 of the central portion 19.
A comparison of Figures 4 and 6 with Figures 7 and 9 will show that the segments 21 and 23 are at different positions so that, as shown in Figure 3, with three basic inserts identified as 16A (as Figures 4 - 6), 16B (as figures 7 - 9) and 16C (not detailed), these are fitted as 16A, 16B, 16C, 16A, 16B, 16C etc to achieve the required "lacing".
The lower portion of Figure 2 also indicates a concrete or asphalt road surface 26. The cutter segments 23 of the centre portion 19 of each insert 16 cuts an arcuately concave recess or depression 27 at a first radius R1. The segments 21 of the two wings 20 cut boundary grooves 28 to each lateral side of the depression 27 at a second, greater radius R2.
