Abstract

An endotracheal intubation device comprising elongate tubes A and B and a connector C. Elongate open ended tube A has an anteriorly disposed blunt distal end and a screw thread attachment at its proximal end for attachment to elongate tube B or connector C. A conventional endotracheal tube may be introduced over tubes A or A and B, however the introducer tubes may also be used to provide ventilation without the use of a conventional endotracheal tube. Connector C allows attachment to a ventilator or capnograph to confirm intubation.

Description

+ Description
This is an anaesthetic device which serves the dual function of the introducer and endotracheal tube. It can be used to confirm endotracheal intubation and subsequently used for ventilation of the patients.
This device could be used for difficult intubations, e.g. Malamputi grade III &IV, failed intubation during Caesarean Section and during cardiopulmonary resuscitation The current introducer cannot confirm endotracheal intubation and cannot be used for ventilation - it is designed purely as an introducer.
To do so 2 a proper endotracheal tube ET tube) must be threaded over the introducer. and placed in the trachea The introducer must be removed, an oxygen delivery system and capnogragh should be attached to the ET tube.
This will take time. The patient may develop hypoxia, and this may jeopardise the safety of patients. If the patient is not intubated in 4 minutes brain death may ensue.
As shown in the drawing, It is composed of three main parts Tube - A. Tube - B. The Connection " C 2 Tube - A Is made of plastic, reinforced by a wire mesh, which could be a steel mesh copper mesh, or any other flexible metal. Alternatively, tube -A could be made of the same material as the gum elastic bougie, or any other flexible, firm and smooth material.
The length of the tube-A is approximately 350 mms,.
The distal end is curved anteriorly, to facilitate tracheal intubation The curvature could be adjusted according to the anatomy of the patient.
The proximal end has a screw attachment, which fits to the connection "C". or to the distal end of tube -B.
Tube - B:
Measures approximately 3 00 mms.
Has two screw attachment ends', the proximal end fits the connection "C", while the distal end fits the proximal end of tube-A.
It acts as an extension to tube-A. Once tube-A is confirmed to be in the trachea, by capnography, the classical endotracheal tube can be guided through tubes B and A, into the correct position in the trachea. Tubes-A and B are then taken out.
Connection "C" Fits to the proximal end of tubes-A &B. It could be attached to the gas delivery system, C-circuit, Anibu bag.... etc, to ventilate the patient in order to avoid hypoxia in difficult or failed intubation It helps to confmn that tube-A is in the correct position, by connecting it to the capnograph and measuring ETC02.
