Abstract

A non-interruptible power supply is disclosed having a cabinet 10 containing an AC to DC converter 6 providing a DC output to an input of a DC to AC inverter 8 for converting DC to AC, and a battery 4 floating across the converter output/inverter input. The cabinet has a door 12 in which is mounted an air conditioning unit 14, having an internal inlet for air from the cabinet and an internal outlet for cooled air to the cabinet. A seal 24 separates the internal inlet and internal outlet so that air emitted from the outlet can return to the inlet substantially only by circulating round the battery. Compared with the conventional arrangement where no seal is provided, the efficiency of cooling the battery is improved so that a lower rated air conditioning unit can be used lowering the cost.

Description

2354379 NON-INTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY This invention relates to
non-interruptible power supplies.
Non interruptible power supplies have an AC to DC converter, e.g. a rectifier network and a DC to AG inverter for converting battery DC to AC. A battery is floated across the rectifier output/inverter input. The converter is connected to the AC mains supply in use. If the mains supply fails, the inverter continues to supply AC power until, hopefully, the mains supply is restored when the battery is recharged via the rectifiers. The battery is often in the form of a bank of separate multicell batteries. It is important that the battery bank is kept at an even temperature, in particular is not allowed to over heat and that individual cells or batteries are all kept at the, same temperature. Tothis end it is known to cool the equipment. If the power supply is intended for use outside, it would be conatined by an environmentally sealed cabinet and cooling would be affected by an air conditioning unit.
Against this background the invention provides a non-interruptible power supply, comprising a cabinet containing a battery, an AC to DC converter providing a DC output to an input of a DC to AC inverter for converting DC to AC, and a battery floating across the converter output/inverter input, the cabinet having a door in which is mounted an air conditioning unit, having an internal inlet for air from the cabinet and an internal outlet for cooled air to the cabinet, a seal separating the internal inlet and intemal outlet so that air emitted from the outlet can return to the inlet substantially only by circulating round the battery. Compared with the conventional arrangement where no seal is provided, the efficiency of cooling the battery is improved so that a lower rated air conditioning unit can be used lowering the cost.
In a preferred arrangement, the battery is located on one side of the seal and the converter and inverter are located on the other side of the seal.
Most preferably, the seal is flexible.
In one convenient arrangement the seal is a brush The seal may be mounted in the cabinet so that the door closes against the seal.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic cross section of a non-interruptible power supply embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a scrap perspective view of a portion of the power supply of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a block diagram of the circuit of the power supply of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the non-interruptible power supply has a bank 2 of batteries 4, e.g. 12 or 6 volt batteries, arranged to give an output voltage of 48 volts. A 48 volt rectifier network 6 receives AC from the mains and delivers a 48 volt DC output in parallel to an inverter 8 and the battery bank 2. The equipment is mounted in a rack 9 contained by an environmentally sealed cabinet 10 closed by a door 12, so that it may be used outside.
In order to cool the equipment, in particular the battery bank 2, the door 12 carries an air conditioning unit shown generally at 14. Inside the cabinet air is drawn in through inlet vents 16 cooled and returned through outlet vents 18. To dissipate the heat removed from the internal air, ambient air is drawn from outside the cabinet through inlet vents 20 passed through a heat exchanger, not shown, and returned via outlet vents 22.
1 n order to improve air circulation over the batteries 4, a seal 24 is mounted on the rack 9 so as to seal against the, inside of the door 12, when closed, between the inlet vents 16 and the outlet vents 18. Cool air from the outlet vents 18 is thus largely forced to circulate around the batteries then the rectifiers 6 and inverter 8 before returning rather warmer to the inlet vents 16.
As may be seen from Figure 2, the seal 24 comprises a brush having bristles 26, thereby being flexible. The upper end of the bristles 26 are secured in a channel section strip 28. The strip 28 has a flange 30 through which fixings 32 secure the brush to a cross member 34 of the frame so as to substantially prevent air flowing directly from the outlet vents 18 to the inlet vents 16.
The air conditioning system is controlled so as to keep the air temperature in the cabinet below a set level.
