Abstract
A slotted blind rivet 10 comprises a rivet body 2 and a mandrel 4, the rivet body comprising a flange 6 and a stem 8 with longitudinal slots 12. Between the flange 6 and the slots 12 the stem 8 has a strengthened portion 14. The strengthening may be provided by longitudinal ribs 16 or alternatively the portion 14 can have a greater wall thickness than the slotted portion or be work hardened.
Description
2353834 IMPROVED BLIND RIVET The present invention relates to an improved
blind rivet comprising a rivet body and a mandrel, of the type which is known as a slotted rivet and which sets by forming collapsing legs on the blind side of the workpiece.
Rivets of the type which form collapsing legs on the blind side of the workpiece are designed to provide a wide support on the blind side. These rivets have the disadvantage that where the workpiece is particularly thin and fflable, or where the hole sizes are larger than recommended, then leg collapse can be uneven and the tail end of the rivet may even pull back into the rivet below the level of the normal position for leg collapse. This pulling back of the tail end of the rivet may cause the legs to more away from the workpiece and create a "tulip" formation on the blind side.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a blind rivet in which the above disadvantages are reduced or substantially obviated. In particular, it is an object of the present invention to provide a blind rivet of the collapsing leg type which is suitable for controlled and reliable setting in thin and friable materials, or in workpieces in which the hole is larger than recommended for the rivet. It is a further object of the present invention to provide a blind rivet of the collapsing leg type which can be set so that the flange is remote from the workpiece, thus providing a location feature for subsequent workpiece assembly.
The present invention provides a slotted blind rivet comprising a rivet body and a mandrel, the rivet body comprising a flange and a stem, the stem being provided with one or more longitudinal slots, characterised in that the stem comprises a reinforced or strengthened portion, located between the flange and the portion of the stem in which the slot(s) are formed.
BR8654 2 The reinforced or strengthened portion may, for example, be reinforced or strengthened by reinforcing ribs, a portion of increased wall thickness and increased outside diameter, or by work-hardening or localised heat treatment. Where the reinforcement is provided by means of ribs, preferably three ribs are provided, equally spaced about the circumference 5 of the rivet stem portion.
Embodiments of a slotted blind rivet will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure I is a view of a first embodiment of an assembled rivet and mandrel; Figure 2 is a section on the line H-11f of the rivet of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a view of a second embodiment of a rivet body; Figure 4 is a view of a third embodiment of a rivet body (when set in an oversize hole); Figure 5 is a view of a conventional slotted rivet (when set); Figure 6 is a view of the rivet of Figure I (when set) and Figure 7 is a view of the rivet of Figure 4 (when set in an oversize hole).
As can be seen from Figures I and 2, a rivet assembly shown generally at 10 comprises a rivet body 2 and headed mandrel 4. The rivet body 2 comprises a flange 6 and a stem S. The stem 8 is provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots 12 and comprises a portion 14, located between the flange 6 and the slots 12 which is reinforced by ribs 16.
As can be seen more clearly from Figure 2, in the embodiment shown, three longitudinal ribs 16 are provided, spaced equally around the outer surface of the reinforced portion 14.
In the second embodiment, shown in Figure 3, the reinforced or strengthened portion 14 comprises a portion having increased wall thickness relative to the portion of the stem 8 which is provided with the slots 12. The external diameter 18 of the portion 14 is increased relative to the external diameter of the slotted portion of the stem 8, but has the BR8654 3 same internal diameter (not shown) as that slotted portion, so that the wall thickness is greater.
In a third embodiment shown in Figure 4, the reinforced or strengthened portion 14 has 5 been strengthened by work hardening or localised heat treatment.
Figure 5 shows the setting of a conventional slotted rivet 510 with a slotted body 508 in an aperture 520 in a workpiece 522. As the rivet 5 10 has been set, the legs 524 formed as the slotted stem portion 508 pulls into the hole causing teh legs to be displaced upwardly, thus moving away from the surface of the workpiece 522 into what is termed a "tulip" formation.
Figure 6 shows the setting of the rivet 10 of Figures 1 and 2 in an aperture 20 of a workpiece 22. As the rivet is set in conventional manner, the legs 24 collapse against the surface of the workpiece 22 to provide a wide support on the blind side of the work piece.
Due to the reinforcing effect of the ribs 16, collapse is limited in length and the slotted stem portion collapses in a controlled and reliable manner.
The desired axial length and radial thickness of the ribs 16 and hence the strength of the portion 14 are determined according to the thickness of the workpiece to which the rivet is to be applied. If it is required that the rivet be set with the flange remote from the workpiece surface, then a rivet according to Figure 1 or Figure 3 is set in an accurately sized hole in the workpiece as shown in Figure 7 so that the rivet can only be inserted as far as the start of the reinforced or strengthened portion 14. The flange 6 is thus separated from the workpiece 22, and after setting, a secondary workpiece with, for example, a keyhole slot, can be located on, and slid beneath, the flange 6 to complete the assembly.
