Abstract

A bag hanger 1 for hanging a plastic bag 2, comprises means 6 and 7 for locking the bag to the hanger, and means 11 and 12 for gripping the bag so that the weight of the bag is not carried solely by the locking means. The locking device preferably consists of a post 6 with a hollow recess which fits over holes 13 of the bag, and a knob or clasp 7 on a movable panel 8 flexibly attached to the hanger, which mates with the post. The gripping device can comprise an inter-engaging rail 11 and channel 12; or two opposing pads (9) surrounding the post and knob which are preferably resilient, may be co-injected rubber and may have non-slip features such as protrusions (10). The device preferably has two means for locking and for gripping, a hook 5 for hanging on a rail and a flat area 3 for a label. The flat area preferably has an edge 4 to which the movable panel is attached. The hanger is preferably made from a plastics material.

Description

2353783 Suspension Device This invention relates to a suspension device
for hanging a plastic bag or the like, a combination of a plastic bag or the like and such a suspension device, and a method for 5 hanging a plastic bag using such a suspension device.
It is becoming commonplace in shops to display goods in plastic bags, which are suspended from a rail or the like. A popular suspension device of the prior art includes a hook for engaging a rail, a clasp comprising a hollow recess and a post for mating with the hollow recess of the clasp. The suspension device of the prior art is attached to a plastic bag by sliding the post through a hole in the plastic bag and closing the clasp over the post to lock the clasp in position. However, plastic bags used for displaying goods in a shop are usually made from thin polyethylene film rendering the plastic bags rather weak. Thus, as soon as some weight is placed in the bags and the bags are attached to the suspension device of the prior art, the suspension device distorts the holes in the bag.
With the foregoing in mind, the present invention provides an improved suspension device, which alleviates the problems highlighted above.
The present invention provides a suspension device for a bag, the suspension device comprising means for locking the device to the bag, and means for gripping the locked bag to prevent the weight of the bag being carried solely by the locking means. Use of the suspension device prevents distorting and tearing of the plastic bag.
Preferably the locking means comprise a first portion for passing through a hole in a bag and a second portion for engaging the free end of the first portion. Preferably the first portion is a post and the second portion is a clasp. Preferably the clasp is carried by a flexible web.
The gripping means may comprise an inter-engaging rail and channel.
Alternatively, the gripping means may comprise a resilient pad. Preferably the gripping means comprise opposing pads, in use the bag being gripped therebetween. Preferably the or each pad surrounds a portion of the locking means.
2 Preferably the device includes two means for locking and two corresponding means for gripping.
Preferably the suspension device is made from plastics material. Preferably the gripping means is co-injected during manufacture. Preferably the gripping means is co injected rubber.
Preferably the gripping means includes non-slip characteristics. The gripping means may inlcude protrusions for gripping the bag.
The present invention further provides a combination of a bag and a suspension device of the present invention.
The present invention further provides a method of hanging a bag using a suspension device of the present invention.
Specific embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of examples, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure I is a rear elevation of a first embodiment of suspension device according to the present invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of suspension device according to the present invention.
With reference to Figures I and 2, there are shown a first and a second embodiment of a suspension device (1) of the present invention for hanging a plastic bag (2) or the like. The suspension device (1) is provided with a flat label area (3) having an edge (4). A hook (5) extends from the edge (4) of the label area (3) for suspending the suspension device (1) on a rail or the like (not shown). The suspension device (1) is further provided with means for locking the device to the bag. The locking means comprise a post (6) with a hollow recess and a knob (7). The post (6) is provided on the label area (3) and the knob or clasp 3 (7) is provided opposite the post (6) on a panel (8) flexibly attached to the edge (4) of the label area (3) by a web. Hence, the post (6) and the knob (7) are in such a position that the knob (7) can be mated with the hollow recess of the post (6) by swinging the panel (8) along the edge (4) of the label area (3). As shown in Figures I and 2, the first and second 5 embodiments of the suspension device (1) are provided with two such locking means.
The suspension device (1) is further provided with means for gripping the locked bag to prevent the weight of the bag being carried solely by the locking means. Referring now to Figure I only, the gripping means comprise two opposing co-injected resilient rubber pads (9), surrounding the post (6) and the knob (7). The pads (9) are provided with protrusions (10) to improve the non-slip characteristics of the pads (9). In use, the plastic bag (2) or the like is gripped between the pads (9). Referring now to Figure 2 only, the gripping means alternatively comprise an inter-engaging rail (11) and channel (12). The rail (11) is provided on the rear of the label area (3) and is substantially parallel to the edge (4) of the label area (3). The channel (12) is provided opposite the rail (11) on panel (8) and is also substantially parallel to the edge (4) of the label area (3). Hence, the rail (11) and the channel (12) are in such positions that the rail (11) can be mated with the channel (12) by swinging the panel (8) about the edge (4) of the label area (3). In use, the plastic bag (2) is gripped between the inter-engaging rail (11) and channel (12). As shown in Figures I and 2, the first and second embodiments of the suspension device (1) are provided with two such gripping means.
The suspension device (1) is attached to the plastic bag (2) or the like by sliding holes (13) in the plastic bag (2) over each post (6) and mating each post (6) with its associated opposing knob (7), thereby causing the area around each hole (13) in the plastic bag (2) to be gripped by the gripping means of the suspension device (1), thus preventing the weight of the bag being carried solely by the locking means.
It will of course be understood that the present invention has been described above purely by way of example. Modifications in detail may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the claims attached hereto.
