Abstract
The container is in the form of a sleeve 1 which can be filled with an appropriate compost prior to the sleeve ends being closed. It may be moulded around the top edge of of the pond where it may be secured by means of a loose flap 2. It is then planted along its length by cutting holes in the fabric through which plants can be inserted into the compost.
Description
CONFORMABLE POND EDGE PLANTING SYSTEM This invention relates to a
conformable pond ed6e planting system.
Systems for growing aquatic plants in ornamental ponds are w.ell known. More usualy they comprise open box structures manufactured from materials that restrict the plant roots.
With existint. designs ' there is no provision made to retain the container against the edge of the pond and the problem of large fish dislodging the cotainers is well known.
A further problem with existing designs is that large fish dig in the planting compost releasing it into the pond.
A further problem witn inexpert instalation of ponds is that a band of pond lining is often left exposed above the water line. This is unsightly and can also allow ultra violet degradation of the 'Liner to occur.
According to the present invention there is provided a conform -able planting container in the form of a flexible sleeve closed at each end and filled with compost. The sleeve is arranged such that it is easily formed to the pond shape. Plants are introduced by cutting holes in the sleeve in convenient places and then insertin6 them through tne sleeve into the compost.
The sleeve carries a flap for part or all of its length to allow it to be secured a&,ainst the pond edge yshieldin6 the liner from view and protecting it from the effects of sunlight.
A specific embodiment of' the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accoiiipanyiri6 drawings in which:- Figure 1 shows the form of.the container.
Figure 2 shows how tne container may be secured.
Reffering to the drawing the container comprises a cylindrical sleeve of a perineable material,in a prefered design a type of non bio-degradable felt. is used. The sleeve is filled with an appropriate planting CORLPOSt and closed at each end 3 and 4 usin6 well known methods. The material is chosen such that water readily pas<&es through it and the fibres are loose enough to allow plant roots to penetrate it but close enough to contain the compost.
The material is extended to provide a flap 2 which extends for part or all of the length of the sleeve.
The flap can be secured at the pond ed6e by well known tec hniques of which two examples are shown in Figure 2.
Holes may be cut in the sleeve at convenient loLations to insert the plants into the compost The plants then Srow in the compost and also on the outside surfaLe of the sleeve by rootine, through the sleeve material.
