Abstract
Balancing apparatus comprises a roller (2) and a board (1) adapted to be placed on the roller for a person to balance on the board. A pair of spaced stops are provided on the underside of the board to limit relative movement between the roller and the board. The board can be concave or convex.
Description
2353227 9076:CP BALANCING APPARATUS The invention relates to balancing
apparatus comprising a roller and a board. In use, the board is placed on the roller and the user stands on the board with his/her feet either side of the roller. In this position, it is possible to balance and roll the roller from side to side. The invention provides an improvement, which prevents the board slipping right off the roller.
According to the invention, there is provided balancing apparatus comprising: a roller and a board adapted to be placed on the roller for a person to balance on the board; wherein a pair of spaced stops are provided on the underside of the board.
Both the board and the roller can be provided in a number of shapes and sizes so that the apparatus can be used by people of different ages and sizes as an exercising and strengthening device or as a plaything.
Embodiments of the invention are described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I is a side view of a board and a roller; Figure 2 is a plan view of a board and roller; Figure 3 is a side view of a second embodiment of a board and roller; Figure 4 is a side view of a third embodiment of a board and roller; Figure 5 is a side view of a fourth embodiment of a board and roller; 9076:CP -2- Figure 6 is a side view of a fifth embodiment of a board and roller; Figure 7 is a side view of a sixth embodiment of a board and roller; Figure 8 is a side view of a seventh embodiment of a board and roller; Figure 9 is a view similar to that of Figure 2 showing an alternative embodiment of 5 the board; and Figure 10 is a further view similar to that of Figure 2 showing a further alternative embodiment of the board.
Balancing apparatus comprising a flat rectangular board I and a cylindrical roller 2 is shown in Figures I and 2. Spaced stops 3 are provided on the underside of the board to limit the relative movement of the board and roller when being used. The stops are positioned inwardly of the ends of the board sufficiently for the feet of the user to be placed outwardly of the stops.
In a preferred embodiment for use by an adult, the roller is about 30.5 cm (12 inches) long and has a diameter of about 10 cm (4 inches). The board has a length of about 61 cm (24 inches) and a width of about 24 cm (9.5 inches). The spacing between the stops is about 36 cm (14 inches).
In the embodiments of Figures 1, 3 and 4, the upper surface of the board is flat. In the embodiment of Figure 1, the lower surface is also flat whereas in the embodiment of Figure 3 the lower surface between the stops 3 is slightly ramped towards the centre. This can be achieved by wedge-shaped inserts 4. In the embodiment of Figure 4, the lower 9076:CP -3- surface of the board is concave between the stops. This again can be achieved by suitably shaped inserts 4. In another embodiment, shown in Figure 7, the lower surface of the board is convex between the stops.
In the embodiments of Figures 5 and 6, the board is curved in side view. In Figure 5, the upper surface is convex and the lower surface is concave. The reverse is the case in Figure 6.
In the embodiments shown in Figure I to 6, the stops are shown as rectangular blocks fitted to the lower surface of the board. These stops may, however, be formed with curved profiles to blend in with the lower surface of the board or may even be integral with the board such as shown in Figure 8.
Since the degree of difficulty experienced by the user will depend to some extent on the spacing between the stops, these may be mounted so that the spacing is adjustable.
The board can be formed in many shapes and examples of these shapes are shown in Figures 2, 9 and 10.
The sizes of the board and of the roller can also be varied according to the user and the intended use. Preferably, the length of the board is from 25 cm (10 inches) to 92 cm (36 inches) and its overall width is from 10 cm (4 inches) to 38 cm (15 inches). The length of the roller may vary from about 5 cm (2 inches) to about 46 cm (18 inches) whilst its 9076:CP -4diameter is between about 5 cm (2 inches) and 46 cm (18 inches). For small children, a board with a length of about 25 cm may be appropriate with a roller of about 5 cm in diameter. For beginner adult users, a board length of about 61 cm with a roller of about 10 cm diameter is preferred. Generally, the length of the board is from about 21/2to 6 times 5 the diameter of the roller but with a maximum useful length of board of about 92 cm.
If the roller is fairly short in length, it may be possible to spin the board on the roller about a vertical axis. If the roller is long, the board may be shuffled along the roller.
For advanced users, foot straps or bindings (not shown) may be provided on the upper surface of the board.
The roller may typically be provided by a hollow tube, with or without end pieces or may be solid.
