Abstract

235,254. Appleton, E. V., Herd, J. F., and Watt, R. A. W. Feb. 11, 1924. Electrostatic meters. - In a cathode-ray oscillograph. a time base which is sensibly linear and unidirectional is produced by means of an electromotive force varying at a controlled and uniform rate in one direction. An oscillating circuit C tuned to a high frequency, for example 3000 kilocycles, is connected in the anode circuit FA of a triode AGF. A reaction coil R is coupled to this circuit so as to produce oscillations. A condenser C is connected between the coil Rand the negative limb of the filament F, and across this condenser is connected a. diode D, which may be a triode of which the grid and plate are connected together. The filament current of the diode may be controlled by a rheostat P, and the saturation of the diode may be controlled by adjustment of a battery B, whereby the linearity of the time scale may be improved. The electromotive force across the condenser C is applied to one pair of plates of the cathode-ray oscillograph the conductivity of the saturated diode being preferably much greater than that between the plates of the oscillograph. With suitable adjustments the system oscillates in trains of oscillations. During each train the grid G rapidly becomes negatively charged, and at the end of each train the grid charge leaks at a uniform rate through the saturated diode D until the next train of oscillations occurs. The time of this leak is determined by the capacity of the condenser C and by the electron emission in the diode D. The ratio of the time of uniform leakage to that during which high-frequency oscillations takes place may be increased by increasing the temperature of the filament F of the triode. Specifications 221.338 and 223,368 are referred to.
