Abstract

A method of manufacturing a plain bearing comprises forming a dispersion comprising a silicon resin, particles of solid lubricant and a hydrolysis-promoting catalyst. The resin forms 30 to 80% by weight of the solids content of the dispersion. The method also comprises spreading the dispersion on to a supporting substrate, drying the dispersion, and curing the resin.

Description

2352483 1 MANUFACTURE OF PLAIN BEARINGS This invention is concerned with
the manufacture of plain bearings and is applicable to plain bearings used for high load, intermittent, oscillating, reciprocating and sliding movements in conditions where provision of conventional lubrication would be difficult or unreliable. Bearings of this type are used as cylindrical bushes with a low-friction bearing surface, either on the internal surface of the bush, the external surface thereof, or both the internal and external surfaces thereof. Such bushes may have flanges which are provided with a low-friction bearing surface. Bearings of this type are also used as half bearings arranged, eg, on opposite sides of a shaft, as thrust washers, as flat components, as axial and radial segments, and as spherical bearings.
A conventional plain bearing of the type referred to above comprises a rigid supporting substrate and a bearing material which forms the lowfriction surface or surfaces. In some cases, the substrate comprises a layer of sintered metal (eg bronze) formed on a sheet (eg formed of steel) and the bearing material is bonded to the substrate by infiltration of the interstices of the sintered layer. In other cases, the substrate has numerous small pockets formed in the surface thereof and the bearing material spreads over the surfaces and fills these pockets. The material in the pockets "keys" the bearing material to the supporting substrate.
The bearing materials referred to above as forming the low-friction bearing surfaces comprise solid lubricant particles, distributed in a matrix formed from a polymer such as PTFE, PEEK and/or POM. However, these polymers require the use organic solvents in the manufacturing process which is undesirable for environmental reasons. These polymers also require high 2 temperatures for curing. It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of manufacturing a plain bearing in which these disadvantages are avoided.
The invention provides a method of manufacturing a plain bearing comprising forming an aqueous dispersion comprising a silicon resin, particles of solid lubricant and a hydrolysis-promoting catalyst, the resin forming 30 to 80% by weight of the solids content of the dispersion, the method also comprising spreading the dispersion on to a supporting substrate, drying the dispersion. and curing the resin.
A method according to the invention avoids the use of organic solvents and, in many cases, the resin can be cured at room temperature. The resin reacts under hydrolysis and condensation to form a highly cross-linked matrix.
Preferably, the solid lubricant is selected from PTFE, graphite and molybdenum disulphide. Good results are obtained when both PTFE and graphite are used together. The particle sizes are preferably between 15pm to 45pm. PTFE may form 5 to 60% by weight of the solids content of the dispersion. Graphite may form 2 to 50 by weight of said solids content.
The catalyst may form 1 to 10% be weight of the solids content of the dispersion. The catalyst may be a suitable compound of tin, zinc, titanium or zirconium.
The invention also provides a plain bearing comprising a supporting substrate and a low-friction bearing surface formed from a bearing material having a matrix formed from silicon resin, the resin forming 30 to 80% by weight of the material, the material also comprising particles of a solid lubricant distributed in the matrix 3 Example A plain bearing comprising a supporting substrate and a bearing layer mounted on said substrate was manufactured by first forming a dispersion in which were mixed a silicone resin (Silres MSE 100 from Walker - polymethyl siloxane, methoxyfunctional resin (alkylsilicone resin with a alkoxy-group) and including a curing agent. The resin formed 66.6% by weight of the solids content of the dispersion; solid lubricant particles formed from PTFE (mean particle size 20 microns). These particles formed 20% by weight of the solids content of the dispersion; solid lubricant particles formed from graphite (mean particle size 36 microns). These particles formed 10% by weight of the solids content of the dispersion; and a hydrolysispromoting catalyst (polybutyl titanate). The catalyst formed 3.3% by weight of the solids content of the dispersion.
The dispersion had a solids content of 99%.
The dispersion was spread by means of a K bar (spraying represents an alternative method of spreading) on to the supporting substrate which was in the form of a steel strip having a layer of sintered bronze thereon. The dispersion infiltrated the layer of sintered bronze and formed a layer approximately 0,3 to 1 mm in thickness over the layer of sintered bronze. The dispersion was then dried so that a substantially dry layer was left on the substrate. The bearing was then left for the resin to cure which occurred at room temperature.
The finished bearing was formed into cylindrical bushes and compared with conventional bushes used for high load, intermittent, oscillating, reciprocating and sliding movements. The bearings were found to have acceptable wear characteristics and a lower coefficient of friction.

1 A method of manufacturing a plain bearing comprising forming a dispersion comprising a silicon resin, particles of solid lubricant and a hydrolysis-promoting catalyst, the resin forming 30 to 80% by weight of the solids content of the dispersion, the method also comprising spreading the dispersion on to a supporting substrate, drying the dispersion. and curing the resin. 2 A method according to claim 1, wherein the solid lubricant is selected from PTFE, graphite and molybdenum disulphicle. 3 A method according to either one of claims 1 and 2, wherein the solid lubricant comprises both PTFE and graphite. 4 A method according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the solid lubricant has a particle size between 15prn to 45pm. 5 A method of manufacturing a plain bearing substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the example. 6 A plain bearing comprising a supporting substrate and a low-friction bearing surface formed from a bearing material having a matrix formed from silicon resin, the resin forming 30 to 80% by weight of the material, the material also comprising particles of a solid lubricant distributed in the matrix.
