Abstract

Resiliant rubber air scoops attached to or part of the side walls of an aircrafts landing wheels tyres so that when the wheels are lowered into the airstream prior to landing the rubber pockets below the axis of rotation cause considerable resistance to the airflow whilst the pockets above the axis of rotation cause minimal resistance causing the wheel to rotate at a speed at touch down similar to the ground speed of the aircraft.

Description

1 2352431 AIRCRAFT UNDERCARRIAGES
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to aircraft undercarriages.
When an aircraft comes into land, the undercarriage is lowered and then, when the aircraft actually touches down, there is a "screech" as the vehicle wheels are caused to accelerate rapidly to match the forward speed of the aircraft.
This action inevitably produces tyre wear and it is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide means for reduzing the amount of tyre wear.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided an aircraft undercarriage which includes means whereby, when the aircraft is coming in to land and the undercarriage is lowered, the wheels of the undercarriage are caused to rotate at a speed proximating to that of the landing speed of the aircraft.
The means for causing the wheels to rotate preferably comprises air scoops which are so shaped that the airflow encountered during landing produces the required wheel rotation.
The air scoops may be part of or be attached to the tyres of the undercarriage wheels. The air scoops may be in the form of resilient rubber pockets bonded to the outer sides of the tyres so that when a scoop is below the axis of rotation of the respective tyre, it produces substantial resistance to air flow whereas, when the scoop is above the axis of rotation of the respective tyre, it produces minimal resistance to air flow.
The rubber pockets may also be formed by arcuate flaps bonded to the vehicle tyre with the resilient nature of the rubber permitting each of the flaps to be pressed against the adjacent part of the 'wall of the tyre when the flap is above the axis of -ihii wheel whereas, when the flap is below the axis of the wheel, the pocket effectively opens to provide substantial resistance to airflow and hence rotation of the wheel.
The configurations of the scoops and the number of scoops for each wheel or tyre will depend on the geometries of the wheels and tyres and on the aircraft landing speed.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figures 1, 2 and 3 are a side elevation, end elevation and plan view of a first form of scoop for attachment to the tyre of a wheel of an aircraft undercarriage, Figure 4 shows a plurality of scoops as shown in Figures 1 to 3 attached to a tyre, Figures 5, 6 and 7 are a side elevation, end elevation and plan view of a second form of scoop for attachment to the tyre of a wheel of an aircraft undercarriage, and Figure 8 shows a plurality of scoops as shown in Figures 5 to 7 attached to a tyre.

Claims (4)

  1. I A number of resilient rubber air scoops attached to or part of the side walls of an aircraft landing wheel tyre so situated as to cause the wheel to rotate when lowered into the airstream prior to landing.
  2. 2. Air scoops as claimed in Claim One but whose resiliant nature enable the scoop to lie flat against the aircraft tyre when above the axis Of rotation but opens when below the axis of rotation.
  3. 3- Air scoops as claimed in Claim One and Claim Two which are made of rubber or neoprene or similar resilient material.
  4. 4. Air scoops substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
